Spanish League: C.N. Barcelona 10 (Dan Young) lost to C.N.A. Barceloneta 17

Summary: We knew this was going to be a tough match. We had played Barceloneta in the final of the Catalan Cup two weeks ago and lost in a tough match. They have a very strong line up right through their roster and we had to try to control the pace of the game if we were going to win. Both teams started slowly with no goals being scored early in the first quarter. Barceloneta were first on the board from a quick extra man goal and the remainder of the quarter went goal for goal. Barceloneta maintained a consistent two goal lead against us for the next two periods as they continued to push hard on the counter. In many instances we were able to control the attack and score a well-earned goal, but we kept on allowing too many soft goals which always had us on the back foot. In the fourth quarter Barceloneta lifted a gear and we were not ready for it. Their counter attack was again consistent and fast and with some exhausted players we could not properly defend against it. This blew the score line out to a final 17-10 loss. Whilst they are a very strong team we need to be stronger in the final quarter and that has been a consistent problem for us so far this season.

Spanish League: C.N. Barcelona 18 bt C.N. Cataluña 10

Summary: Despite being the first match of the season this was an important match for us to in win and to start the season with confidence. Cataluña had not looked overly strong in pre-season training, but like many of the teams in the league, on a good day, the game could go either way. We started slowly conceding two quick goals from a man down, but we responded quickly and took the quarter by a goal. Form here we gained momentum and ran away with it. Our counter attack was very strong and we were able to break out to a strong lead heading into the last term.  It was a great team effort for our first match with a star performance from our captain.

Adriatic League: VK Budva 8 (Blake Edwards 2) drew VK Primorac 8, VK Budva 6 bt VK Triglav 4

Summary:
Game 1 VK Budva vs. Primorac:  It was our first televised game for the season as it was the local derby against Primorac from Kotor. Our coach warned us before the game that there is a rivalry between the two clubs, so we were prepared for a hard game. In the first half we had a comfortable two goal lead and looked to be well in control of the game. We were playing with good defence and were creating many dangerous scoring opportunities. In the second half Primorac took the game to another intensity and we simply did not respond. We started to have some poor shot selections in front of goal which they scored immediately from on the counter. Primorac were able to take the lead and go up by one goal twice during critical stages of the game, but luckily we were fortunate enough to get away with a draw. Our team however was very disappointed with the result as we were the favourites going into this game.

Game 2 VK Budva vs. Triglav: This was going to be another hard and very important game for us to win. Considering the 15 hour travel it was already going to be a hard game. To make things harder we were also missing our key defender and centre forward who is probably our best and most important player in the team. We played very good defence which showed on the scoreboard as Triglav score just four goals for the game. Our attack was steady but it clearly showed that we were missing our centre forward as we lacked a little structure. Our extra man attack was also not that good as we often forced opportunities by trying to score from individual brilliance rather than building an opportunity as a team.

Euro League: C.N.A Barceloneta 15 bt CN Marseille 4

Summary: After a good week of preparation the team was ready both physically and tactically for the third game of Euro League versus French outfit CN Marseille. After their upset win over Brescia, however, we knew we were in for a tough game. The game started off fairly evenly with a 2-2 first quarter. It was then we really put the pressure on them and had an outstanding second quarter to take the lead 7-2. From there they were looking very exhausted and we took advantage of this putting on a number of goals in the third period before running away with an easy 15-4 win. Despite a good win it could have been better with a number of clear counter attacks that either hit the post or the goal keeper saved. Their keeper was particularly good also saving two penalties. We are now clear leaders in our group with nine points from three games. Three clear of second place with our next game against Brescia in a few weeks’ time. Next up in the Spanish League we play Catalunya away, followed by our clash with C.N Mediterrani next Saturday. The first few days of the week we will also be training with C.N Marseille.
