Adriatic League: VK Budva 4 (AJ Roach 1 goal) lost to VK Primorje 12

Summary: Going into this game we knew we had to play very well just to be competitive. Primorje have eight Olympic gold medallists in their team and finished second in last year’s European Championship. With one of our more experienced left handers still missing due to injury, and without our main centre-back, who was absent due to political engagements, we sent a very young and inexperienced to Rijeka.

We got off to a poor start conceding too many easy goals on the counter and went into the first break trailing 5-0. After this we woke up in defence and started defending a lot better conceding just two goals while scoring one of our own. In the second half our attack looked more dangerous, and we had one excellent extra-man conversion which was produced by fast ball movement and sliding from players off the ball. Defensively though, we struggled with our set defence. There seemed to be a lot of confusion and misunderstanding amongst the players. This is probably a reflection of our preparation and lack of games together. Hopefully as the season continues, it will become clearer to everyone on what we are trying to achieve. Although we would have liked the margin to have been closer many of the players took a lot out of the game.

Adriatic League: VK Budva 8 bt VK Posk 6

Summary:  We played Posk from Croatia in the opening round of the Adriatic League. This was seen as a must win for us at home. Although we were expected to win this game, we knew it would be a difficult affair. Considering our team was months behind in preparation, we knew our team cohesion and implementation of our team structures and game plans would be difficult.

We started off the game unsettled and missed many opportunities to eventually go into the first break at 1-1. The second quarter saw us convert more opportunities, but we also let in silly goals leaving us at 5-4 up at half time. We came out in the third period with much stronger defence and were able to win it 3-0 before capitalising on our momentum to seal the game 8-6. It was a scratchy game for us with many missed opportunities. We hit the woodwork numerous times and failed to capitalise in one on ones. Overall, though, it was a good effort seeing as our team is new together.
