05.10.2012
Balmain water polo club has announced Erkin Shagaev as their new men’s first grade and National League coach for the upcoming 2012/13 season.
The club is privileged to have the Olympic gold medalist and former Aussie Sharks coach at the helm and believes Shagaev will bring an unrivalled knowledge of the game to Balmain.
Club stalwart, Gavin Woods, who has played under Shagaev for many years, said he was very encouraged by the signing of the highly regarded coach.
“Having been coached by Erkin over a number of years I am aware of what is required,” Woods said.
“There is no doubt in my mind that with Erkin’s guidance this group can achieve something no Balmain side has done before and that is win a National League title.”
Former Balmain men’s and women’s National League coach, Phillip Bower, agreed saying Shagaev has the credentials to bring the club great success.
“Erkin is a highly respected coach with a worldwide reputation,” Bower said.
“He has a great knowledge and passion for the game of water polo and I believe Erkin will take this Balmain side to new heights over the next few years.
“I hope every member of the club gives him their utmost support and I look forward to watching the Tigers play at Dawny this coming season.”
The team will be looking to defend their Sydney Metropolitan title in the Sydney Summer competition that begins this Saturday October 6 against UNSW Wests.
