2012 NWPL Weekend Preview: Swinnerton to play 250th

Watch This Space...Throughout this season of the NWPL, AWPI be providing a week by week coverage of all the results, big match previews and news and information.

Week two of the National Water Polo League continues tonight with UNSW Wests Magpies captain Daniel Swinnerton playing his 250th league game.

In what will be a club record, Swinnerton will bring up the milestone in his team’s clash against the Fremantle Mariners at Uni of NSW pool.

Swinnerton, who first began his national league career with Wests’ in 2001, said the milestone is a great recognition for his 12 year career.

“I am looking forward to it. I look forward to every game, but I guess playing your 250th games, particularly for such a great club, is a great achievement,” Swinnerton said.

“It will be a big occasion with plenty of fans attending, but on a personal note I’m going into it like every other match. I was once told ‘not to count your games, but make sure your games count’ and that’s the attitude I will have.”

A win will see the Magpies improve their record to three wins from as many matches, and Swinnerton believes the addition of Aussie Sharks’ stars Joel Dennerley and Johnno Cotterill has a great thing for the club.

“The combination of Joel, Johnno and Richie (Campbell) has definitely boosted our ranks and we will be looking to maintain our good run with a tough win against Fremantle tonight,” he said.

Swim off is at 7.15pm

In other weekend games, the Fremantle club continues its eastern seaboard road trip with four men and women’s match against the Balmain Tigers, while the Fyfe Adelaide Jets men’s team will be out to stop their zero and four start when they play the Brisbane Barracudas at home.

In total, 36 games will have been played across the week, with Sunday’s local derby between the UNSW Wests club and the Cronulla Sharks rounding out the action.

Earlier in the week, the Balmain Tigers women extended their impressive start to 2012 notching their third win, defeated the KFC Queensland Breaker 11-7. They now sit third on ladder having not dropped a game.

The Tigers’ men got their campaign back on track with consecutive wins, also over the KFC Breakers. Australian Junior men’s representative Paul Sindone starred in the two games, netting five times.

Other results saw the Fremantle men and women clean sweep the Hunter Hurricanes.
