Boys Gold Medal

Hunter Hurricanes Blue has surged to victory in the boy’s 14 & under gold medal match defeating local side Melville Sharks 12-5 in the final.

The Daniel Marsden coached side led from start to finish as they built upon their fantastic week to claim the club’s second 14 & under title in two years after the girls won in 2010.

Hunter started off in steady fashion leading 3-1 at quarter-time, before extending that lead to 5-2 at the main break.

Melville, who had played great polo all week, had an opportunity to reduce the margin late in the second quarter but the Hurricanes defence was able to hold out.

Marsden’s son Keenan and teammate Lucas Mackaway put on the afterburners in the second half scoring the remaining seven goals between them to close out the seven goal win.

For Australian water polo legend Marsden, the victory was as satisfying as any international win with the Aussie Sharks, with his son Keenan also being named tournament MVP and highest goal scorer.

“It’s been a fantastic week for everyone involved with the Hunter Hurricanes,” Marsden said.

“The organisation of the tournament has been wonderful, the kids have loved it and to get the win was even better.

“It’s also great to see the family side of things. I have been involved with the sport for over 30 years now and for Keenan all the other boys to do so well, makes me think I could be involved for a few more years to come.”

Melville’s silver medal was the second for the club after the girls also fell agonisingly short in their gold medal match.

Hunter Scorers: Keenan Marsden 7, Lucas Mackaway 5, Ryan Mulligan,

Melville Scorers: Jacob Jones 2, Jack Marshall 2, Cody Smith 1

Boys Bronze Medal

In the boy’s bronze medal match, the combined force of the Brisbane Barracudas and KFC Queensland Breakers came to the fore as the SE Qld Bees defeated Drummoyne 6-5.

The match was neck and neck the whole way, with neither team giving an inch until Bees keeper James Tudball made two spectacular penalty saves to give his team the advantage.

Louis Townsend and Edward Craw were the multiple scorers for the Brisbane team with three and two respectively, while Drummoyne’s goals were spread amongst their group.

Bees’ team manager, Marisa Dann, said the boy’s performance was quite a feat considering most players had never been to a national championship before.

“This week has been a massive learning curve for the guys as for some this has been their first time away from home,” Dann said.

“They have improved hugely throughout the week and hopefully we can come back next year and go two better.”

Result: SE Qld Bees 6 bt Drummoyne 5

SEQ Scorers: Louis Townsend 3, Edward Craw 2, Darcy Moreland 1

Drummoyne Scorers: Andrei Crkvencic, Cooper Steen, Liam Corry, Michael Sohns, Michael Hayward.

In the game for fifth and sixth, City Beach Bears defeated UNSW West 5-1 with Lucas Richardson and Jed Thompson scoring two each.

Girls Gold Medal

The Ovens & Murray girls water polo team has taken out the gold medal at the 2012 14 & under national championships after defeating Melville Marlins 6-3 in the final in Perth today.

The scores were level at the first break with both teams producing some high quality polo, before the Albury-Wodonga side kicked away in the third quarter to establish an unassailable lead.

Melville tried desperately to fight back in the last quarter but was unable to break down the O & M defence.

Brooke Dickie starred for Ovens & Murray scoring three goals, while Kate Gallaher, Olivia Bahr and Hollie Wornes netted one each.

Olivia Sell, Sofie Pontre, Gabriella French were the goal scorers for the Marlins.

Ovens & Murray coach, Brendon Dickie, said the girls were very excited about the performance and credited their ability to play as a team.

“The girls were very good today,” Dickie said.

“It was a tight tussle in the first half, but we kept sticking to the plan and in the third quarter we managed to score three goals to edge away.

“Overall it’s been a great week and the girls have had a great time. They’ve been a really close group of girls and have gelled from the moment we introduced them.”

Melville's silver added to the bronze medal won earlier in the day by fellow Perth side Dolphins Blue.

Result: Ovens & Murray 6 bt Melville Marlins 3

O & M Scorers: Brooke Dickie 3, Kate Gallaher, Olivia Bahr, Hollie Wornes

Girls Bronze Medal

Dolphins Blue has won the girl’s bronze medal defeating Brisbane's All Hallows 8-6.

The Perth side got off to a great start leading by four goals at half time, before All Hallows mounted a comeback in the second half to reduce the margin to two.

Mimi Gregg, Matilda Simcock and joint player of the series Lara Zimmerman each scored two goals for Dolphins, while Meg Hudnott and Alice Williams were the main scorers for All Hallows.

Dolphins Blue coach Mark Entwistle said the performance by the girls was fantastic and believed the tournament was a roaring success.

“The girls have played great polo all week and for them to win the game and get rewarded with the bronze is fantastic,” Entwistle said.

“I think it’s been fantastic to have the boy’s and girl’s tournament played at the same time as the kids have been running around everywhere and having a ball.”

Result: Dolphins Blue 8 bt All Hallows 6

Dolphins Scorers: Mimi Gregg 2, Matilda Simcock 2, Lara Zimmerman 2, Josefina Garza, Ellie Thomas

All Hallows Scorers: Meg Hudnott 2, Alice Williams 2, Georgia Purvis, Caetlen Tooley

Day 4

Melville could become the second club in as many years to clean sweep the boy’s and girl’s 14 & under national club championships after dominating day four of the competition, with the Sharks and the Marlins both advancing to the gold medal matches.

Cronulla first achieved the feat in 2008, before repeating the effort last year in Canberra.

Out to stop them will be NSW’s Hunter Hurricanes Blue and the Victoria/NSW cross-border club Ovens & Murray, who also put in impressive displays on day four.

The Melville Sharks boy’s started the day in tough fashion grinding out a close 3-2 win over defending champions Cronulla in the quarter-finals.

The Sharks were up 2-1 at half time before holding on to their slender lead courtesy of a second strike by Jacob Jones’ in the dying minutes.

The quarter-finals between Drummoyne and City Beach Bears, and SE Qld Bees and UNSW Wests were also tight with just three goals splitting the teams.

Drummoyne jumped out to cracking start in their game leading 3-0 at half time, before City Beach Bears stormed back into contention through two goals to Lucas Richardson. However, a second goal to Drummoyne’s Cooper Steen in the final term all but ended the home team’s chances.

SE Qld Bees and UNSW Wests were tied 2-2 at half time in their match with neither team giving too much away. Only doubles to Edward Craw and Darcy Moreland late in the piece resulted in the Bees pulling away.

It was much easier for the Hunter Hurricanes in the final quarter-final, with the son of former Aussie Sharks legend Dan Marsden, Keenan, scoring six goals to lead his team to a 22-0 victory.

In the first semi-final, Jack Marshall scored eight goals for the Melville Sharks, including six in the second half, to lead his team to a 17-5 win over the SE Qld Bees.

The Bees were within touching distance early in the match, trailing by just one at quarter time, before Marshall unleashed his powerful surge late in the game to extend the margin to nine by the last term.

Keenan Marsden continued in his father’s footsteps also scoring eight goals, as the Hunter Hurricanes Blue defeated Drummoyne 19-5.

Marsden’s six first half goals all but put the result out of doubt, with the Newcastle based side maintaining their form for a 14 goal win.

The Hurricanes now play the Sharks at 12.50pm Perth time for the gold medal, with Drummoyne and SE Qld Bees battling it out for bronze at 9.50am.

In other games, UNSW Wests and City Beach Bears will clash for fifth and sixth, while late on day four, last year’s winners, Cronulla, claimed seventh spot with an 8-3 win over Tritons.

In the girl’s semi- finals, the Melville Marlins continued the club’s great day taking out their match against All Hallows 6-2.

The Marlins came out of the blocks firing, scoring four goals in the opening minutes to lead by three at the first break.

All Hallows were able to peg back the margin in the second term to go into half-time trailing 4-2, but two further strikes by the Marlins sealed the victory.

Marlins player Emily Davies led the attack scoring four of her team’s six goals, while Sofia Chaves and Olivia Sell helped out with one each.

They now face Ovens & Murray in the clash for gold, after the Albury-Wodonga based side edged past fellow Perth club Dolphins Blue 4-3.

In what was a neck and neck tussle, the scores were locked at 2-2 and 3-3 at the end of the second and third quarters, before Ovens & Murray nicked a goal late in the piece to secure a memorable finals berth.

Kate Gallaher, Olivia Bahr, Brooke Dickie and Hollie Wornes each scored a goal for Ovens & Murray, while Lara Zimmerman, Matilda Simmock and Tess Jenkins netted for the Dolphins.

The gold medal will be decided at 11.50am Perth time, with the bronze game between All Hallows and Dolphins Blue starting at 10.50am.

Other games saw Drummoyne win the battle for 9th and 10th 4-2 over City Beach Bears, UNSW Killer Whales claim seventh position with a 9-2 win over Sydney Nth Beaches , while Hunter Hurricanes and defending champions Cronulla will playoff off for fifth at 8.30am.

The day started with the remaining round robin clashes with the Hunter Hurricanes, SE Qld Bees, City Beach Bears and Cronulla all vying for top spot in their respective Group B and Group D pools.

The Hunter Hurricanes dominated their match-up against the SE Qld Bees taking out the contest 10-3 with Lucas Mackaway continuing his great tournament with four more goals.

They finished Group D with four wins from as many matches and booked an automatic berth in the quarterfinals.

City Beach Bears took out the other key round robin match edging out Cronulla 4-2.

Hunter Tierney led the scoring with two goals, while teammates Lucas Richardson and James Ainsworth each pitched in with two.

They too progress directly to the quarterfinals as does Group A winners Melville Sharks and Group C winners UNSW Wests who both ended the pool stage undefeated.

In the afternoon's playoff games, Drummoyne, SE Qld Bees, Cronulla and Tritons all won their matches to also progress to the quarterfinals.

Drummoyne took out the opening playoff match against Dolphins Blue 8-3 with Liam Corry scoring three goals, while the SE Qld Bees survived a tough contest against state rivals Sunshine Coast to come away 6-5 winners.

The other two games were also tight with defending champions Cronulla overcoming Melbourne Collegians 5-3, and Perth based Tritons pipping Richmond 6-5.

A host of teams have continued their winning start to the 2012 14 & under club championships after Hunter Hurricanes Blue, Melville Sharks, City Beach Bears, Cronulla, UNSW Wests and SE Qld Bees all improved their records to three wins from as many games.

The Melville Sharks and Hunter Hurricanes Blue were particularly impressive, conceding just zero and two goals respectively.

The Hurricanes Blue continued their domination of Group D after they defeated City Beach Red 18-1 and Dolphins Blue 11-1.

A mixture of interstate rivals have come to the fore on day two of the girl's 14 & under championships with bordertown club Ovens & Murray leading the way after recording five wins from their five round robin matches.

The Albury and Wodonga based club secured 8-2, 11-0 and 6-2 victories over City Beach Bears, Stuartholme and Drummoyne to take out first place in Group D and progress to the quarter-finals.

Olivia Bahr scored six goals for the day, while teamate Kate Gallaher continued her goalscoring streak scoring scoring four more goals to take her tournament tally to ten.

Perth awaits future stars

The future stars of Australian water polo are set to converge on Perth this Easter long weekend for the 2012 14 & under national championships.

Over five cracking days, 41 teams from 19 clubs and five different states, will contest the championships with the Challenge Stadium, Perth playing host.

A record number of Perth teams have entered the championships with City Beach, Dolphins, Melville and Tritons providing 17 of the 41 squads on show.

Sydney club Cronulla are the defending champions with both the boy’s and girl’s teams likely to go close again.

Other clubs that are set to push for a medal are Melville and Drummoyne in the girls and Melville and Queensland in the boys.

Western Australian Water Polo CEO Dale Ballantyne said he was excited about having the tournament in Perth and believed it was a great opportunity to nurture the future stars of tomorrow.

“This will be one of the biggest tournaments on record with 41 teams in action, so I guess the main step is to make sure that everyone is happy and having a great time,” Ballantyne said.

“This includes both the parents and the kids as this will be their first introduction to the national level, and being at Easter we want to give everyone the best possible experience.

“For the players, this will mean ensuring that they want to keep playing water polo after the tournament and the best way to do that is by getting them to become friends with everyone else.

“As a result we have organised a closing disco at City Beach Surf Life Saving Club, plus a wine and cheese night for the parents on the Saturday.

“This tournament is very much a transition competition so as they end their years in the 14 & under age bracket, we need to make sure that they keep coming back in the 16’s and 18’s.”

Competition begins on Good Friday at 8.30am with round one round robin games.

The tournament will continue over the weekend before culminating with the medal games on Tuesday.
