Two goals each from Paris Bromfield and Jess Lundgren has led the Sunshine Coast to a convincing 8-4 win over defending champions Drummoyne Red in the girls gold medal match at the 16 & Under National Club Championships.

Four first quarter goals to the Queensland team opened a comfortable advantage and despite only scoring two goals in the second half, Sunshine Coast was able to hold on for a memorable victory.

“We were very nervous before the game as the girls really wanted to win,” ecstatic coach Helen Park said.

“We had won silver at the U/14’s so we were hoping to go one better. They got the first goal, but after that we started to defend better and our attack improved as well.

“I believe it is the first time Queensland has won a National Club Championship in any age group, so this win is amazing for us.”

The performance betters the Sunshine Coast’s fourth place finish in 2010 and signals the end of New South Wales based teams’ dominance in the championships over the past three years. Click here for more details

Melville Sharks continued their supremacy in the boys age group smashing Hunter Hurricanes 21-6 in a very one sided final.

A five goal brace to William Mackay and a four-goal helping hand from Jordan Kremers-Taylor sealed their second straight championship win.

“Everyone played really well today, especially our two main goal scorers (Mackay and Kremers-Taylor), but all in all it was a great group effort,” head coach Alan Taylor said.

“The boys were really fired up at the start and that attitude showed in the score.

“Eight of the teams’ players have now been selected in the national squad which is a great indication for the U/18’s and the future.”

Melville celebrated their achievement in style scoring six fourth quarter goals to cap off an amazing week. Click here for more details

Hunter progress into final

The Hunter Hurricanes will be out to stop the dominance of the Melville Sharks when the two boys' teams clash in the gold medal match of the 16 & Under National Club Championships tomorrow.

Hunter have been one of the more successful clubs at the championships with both their boys and girls teams making the semi-finals and are looking to cap off the great week with one more major victory.

The boys progressed to the decider after a classic contest against close rivals Central Coast in which they took out 9-8 and team manager Darren Turner said it was a highlight for the boys just to make the quarters let alone the final.

"Anything in the top eight would have been great but to make the top four and the final is amazing for the guys," Turner said.

"Central Coast is a team we have played often and know quite a lot about, but to overcome them is very exciting."

Central Coast had tied up the contest at 8-8 in the fourth quarter before the Hurricanes sealed the contest with a late goal.

Christopher Bayko and Jesse Deloraine, two of the senior members of the squad, starred in attack scoring three goals each while Jason Mackaway was strong in goals.

Melville Sharks assured they would be fighting for another gold after they overpowered the greatly improved Melbourne Collegians side 14-2.

Andre Rebelo and Jordan Kremers-Taylor led the Sharks attack scoring three goals each while Ben Cooper and Mitchell Yates netted twice to extend the margin out to 12.

Hunter Hurricanes and Melville Sharks will face off for gold at 1.15pm with the bronze medal match between Central Coast and Melbourne Collegians to be played earlier in the morning at 9.00am.

Drummoyne Red girls' team have kept their hopes alive of a second straight championship after they defeated the Hurricane's girls team 7-4 in their semi-final.

Fiona Walsh and Ellen Hahn led the scoring for Drummoyne with three and two goals respectively while Montana Perkins was impressive up front for Hunter scoring 3 of the team's four goals.

In a repeat of last year's semi-final Drummoyne Red now face the championship's big improvers the Sunshine Coast for the gold medal. Drummoyne won that contest 9-6 and will be looking for the likes of Walsh and Hahn, who both played in that game, to lead the team around.

The Sunshine Coast progressed to the final on the back of a 6-5 win over Sydney Northern Beaches, who have fallen short of claiming the top prize for the third straight year.

Tiana Anderson and Jess Lundgren sealed the victory for the Sunshine Coast scoring three and two goals each and will hope they can repeat their efforts in the final tomorrow.

Sunshine Coast and Drummoyne Red will play for gold at 11.45am while the bronze medal match between Hunter Hurricanes and Sydney Northern Beach will start at 10.30 am.

Earlier quarter-final action saw the Melville Sharks boys win the all Perth clash 13-6 against UWA Blue, Central Coast defeated KFC Breakers Red 2-1, the Hunter boys beat Drummoyne 11-5, and Melbourne Collegians surprised Cronulla Blue 2-1.

In the girls, the Hunter girls advanced with a 10-7 win over Dolphins Blue, Drummoyne Red beat Cronulla Blue 5-4, Sydney Northern Beaches defeated UNSW Yellow 13-5 and Sunshine Coast smashed local side Essendon 18-3.

All of tomorrow's games will be played at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre with the 5th and 6th classification matches to kick off procedings at 8.00am.

Quarter-finalists decided

The Melbourne Collegians boys’ team have joined fellow Victorian squad Essendon girls as the home state’s only representatives in the quarterfinal stage of the 16 & Under Club Championships by defeated UNSW Wests Black 9-2 in the round of 16 today.

After finishing second in their group during the preliminary stages, the Melbourne Collegians continued their good form by easily accounting for the New South Wales side and now face Cronulla Blue for a spot in the semi-finals.

Team manager Lyn Celotti said the boys have been progressing nicely through the week and today’s effort just showed how talented they are.

“We played very strong today in beating their (UNSW) number one team and there were good contributions by all particularly in defence,” Celotti said.

“It is always nice to play in your home state and we have had a lot of support by the parents so that has helped the group to play well.”

In other finals action, defending champions Melville Sharks continued their impressive tournament by beating fellow Perth team the Dolphins 11-2 and now face another Western Australian side UWA Blue for a place in the semis.

KFC Breakers Red is the sole Queensland representative left in medal contention after they defeated South Australia 8-5, but face a hard task against the undefeated Central Coast team who smashed Tasmania 10-3.

New South Wales rivals Hunter Hurricanes and Drummoyne make up the other quarter-finalists with the later causing a mini upset over the higher ranked Sydney University in a 4-3 thriller.

Essendon girls confirmed Melbourne would have two home teams in the next phase of the event clinching a quarterfinals spot by pipping Brisbane Barracudas 6-5 in a tight match.

A last minute 5m penalty by Alex Cox sealing the victory.

This is already the best result for Essendon having finished 22nd in 2009 and 17th in 2010 and team manager Catherine Steere said the feeling among the group was amazing.

"The girls are euphoric knowing that the worst they can do is 8th this year. The next few games will be tough but you can never underestimate the underdog," a delighted Steere said.

They now face the in-form Sunshine Coast team who have only conceded 12 goals in the championships so far and remain as one of the favourites to take gold.

Sydney Northern Beaches’ attempt to break a three year runners-up hoodoo is still in sight after they easily accounted for Tasmania 17-1. UNSW Yellow awaits them in what will be one of two all New South Wales clashes tomorrow morning.

The Dolphins Blue team is left to fly the Western Australia flag after smashing Stuartholme 23-2 in the biggest winning margin of the round of 16 and will next play the Hunter Hurricanes. The other quarter sees Drummoyne Red play Cronulla Blue.

Cronulla Blue dominant in preliminaries

The Cronulla Blue boys team have ended the preliminary rounds with five wins from as many games and are looking as one of the teams to beat as the 16 & Under National Club Championships progress into the finals stage.

With a 12-0 win over Tasmania and 15-1 defeat of UNSW Wests White on day three of the championships the young team from Sydney’s Sutherland Shire are displaying a style of polo which could see them compete for the medals come Sunday.

Team manager Chris Brooks said the team has been progressing nicely and has done what has been asked of them so far.

“The coach has been working with the players to time our moves and combinations and so far it has paid off, but the competition really just starts now for us,” Brooks said.

“It has been a great opportunity for the guys to catch up with other players they only get to see once a year but in a sporting sense it is the best way for them to test themselves and improve.”

The Melville Sharks continue to be Cronulla’s main rival with the Perth based side also recording their fifth win of the week to easily top Group A.

Other teams Brooks sees as threats in the boys draw are New South Wales rivals Central Coast and Sydney University, who finished top of their group despite having a 4-4 draw against Melbourne Collegians in the last game of the day.

In the girls’ championship, Dolphins Blue has emerged as a leading contender for the gold medal after defeating Cronulla Blue 7-6 in one of the closest games of the week.

The win took the Perth based Dolphins team to the top of Group B and in a good position to progress to the semi-finals.

Leading contenders Drummoyne Red and Sunshine Coast continued their claims both notching convincing wins to take their tally to five wins for the week.

The top four boys and girls teams in each group now progress to the round of 16 which starts tomorrow at 09.40am, while the remaining teams will play for positions 17 to 24.

Sunshine Coast sizzles

The Sunshine Coast 16 & Under girls team was one of the surprise packets of last year’s National Club Championships making it all the way to the semi-finals on the back of a squad largely made up of 13 and 14 year-olds.

The same group has returned this year with more experience and are on pace to better their fourth place finish after three strong wins in their opening three games.

Defence has been a key to their success conceding just 8 goals compared to the whopping 56 goals they have scored in attack and team manager Leanne Bromfield believes last year’s effort has prepared them nicely.

“The girls were very impressive last year and it was a great experience for them so coming back we wanted to emphasise positive team play and strong defence,” Bromfield said.

Coach Helen Park agreed but said it was important to keep working on the basics.

“We have concentrated on working on our team combinations and communication and so far it has worked well.” Park said.

“Tournaments like these are great for the girls to play different opposition and learn different tactics and so far things have been working well.”

In other girls action Cronulla Blue also improved their record to three from three after recording a 14-2 win over Tasmania, while other championship favourites' Drummoyne Red and Sydney Northern Beaches also secured easy victories.

Central Coast have emerged as leading contenders in the boys draw after completing a tight 9-5 win over the previously undefeated Hunter Hurricanes before demolishing NYP Dragons 28-2.

They now top Group C after four wins including a victory over last year’s runners-up Brisbane Barracudas and look likely to progress to the finals.

Perth side Melville Sharks have continued their quest for back-to-back titles with two more wins on day two defeating Drummoyne 16-2 and UNSW Wests Black 14-2.

Another team that is progressing nicely is the Cronulla Blue team with three wins from three games.

Drummoyne Red begin well

Defending champions Drummoyne Red girls’ team have kicked off their defence of the 16 & Under National Club Championships with two strong victories on day one of competition in Melbourne.

The Sydney based squad began their tournament with a convincing 9-4 win over traditional powerhouse Melville, followed by a strong 11-5 victory over close rivals UNSW Killer Whales Yellow.

The contest between the two New South Wales teams was expected to be one of the closer games of the day but the impressive performance by Drummoyne surprised even team manager Rob Laycock.

“We knew it was going to be a very tough match as they (UNSW Yellow) are a very good team but we were up 4-1 at the first quarter and the girls just kept improving in a very good performance,” Laycock said.

“We are now in a good position for the tournament and it is a reflection of a lot of hard training that the girls have put in over the past few weeks.”

Drummoyne Red joins fellow undefeated Queensland school team All Hallows as leaders of their pool.

Other impressive results in the girls’ competition saw Sydney Northern Beaches secure two easy wins including a 31-2 thrashing over UNSW Killer Whales Black and Sunshine Coast commenced their event defeating Cronulla Black 23-2 in their only game of the day.

In the boys’ championship, Melville Sharks began their quest of reaching the final for the third straight year by defeating top team KFC Breakers Red 11-1 in a strong defensive display before smashing Cronulla Black 22-4.

The result places them at the top of group A and coach Alan Taylor believes the boys are progressing nicely.

“In our first game we had a few kinks in our attack but our defence was very good and we were able to beat the Breakers on the back of that,” Taylor said.

“Second up against Cronulla we played an inexperienced team, but we were able to improve our attack and it showed with every player getting on the score sheet.”

The Hunter Hurricanes signalled an early warning to their rivals smashing Victorian team Nunawading/Yarra Plenty Dragons 30-3 before edging out Sunshine Coast 12-11 in what may decide group C winners.

2011 16 & Under National Club C'Ships: Sydney Northern Beaches to go one better

The Sydney Northern Beaches Breakers 16 & Under girls team will be hoping to shrug the bridesmaid tag as they look to capture the 16 & Under National Club Championship after two successive silver medals when the titles begin next month in Melbourne.

With the championships a perfect breeding ground for some of Australia’s future stars, the tournament is an ideal way for clubs to develop their players and groom them for senior competition.

Having missed out narrowly in 2010 losing 10-8 to Drummoyne Red, and being pipped by Cronulla Black in 2009, the Northern Beaches club has formed one of the more successful youth programs producing consistent high finishes and numerous Australian representatives including recent FINA World Junior Championships bronze medallists Hannah Buckling and Emily Scott.

Hoping to go one better this time around, head coach for the past five years Jamie Ryan said the good record was a result of a large base of water orientated athletes to choose from and frequent highly talented athletes coming into the club.

“We have a large group of local juniors from schools and Flippa Ball to draw players from and in the time I’ve been with the Breakers we have had one or two players every year make the Australian Junior team,” Ryan said.

“We will again be more than competitive this year with the team being just as good as others in the past and I’m hoping that we can finally get the gold.”

New South Wales clubs have dominated the last two championships with Drummoyne, Cronulla and the Hunter Hurricanes also securing medals and will be favoured to contend again.

Other clubs that should perform highly are the two Dolphins’ sides from Western Australia and the Sunshine Coast who came fourth last year.

The tournament gets underway on Tuesday, October 4 with Sydney Northern Beaches to begin their tournament against Perth based team City Beach.

The venues for the girls’ matches will be split between the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre and the Victorian University Aquatic Centre at Footscray with the preliminary rounds commencing each day at 08:00am and finishing at 15:30pm.

2011 16 & Under National Club C'Ships: Mellville Sharks favourites

Western Australian club Melville has a proud history of producing some of the country’s finest young male water polo players, many of whom have gone on to play for the Fremantle Mariners in the National Water Polo League (NWPL) and the Australian Sharks men’s team.

The tradition is set continue when the club's all conquering 16 & Under Melville Sharks team aims for their third straight title when the boys’ 16 & Under National Club Championships begin next month in Melbourne.

Having defeated Brisbane Barracudas and Cronulla Black in the last two editions, the Melville Sharks will once again have to overcome a very strong line-up of the nation’s most elite players to secure victory.

Overall there are 24 teams from 6 different states competing in the tournament with sides from New South Wales and Western Australia the best represented.

Melville General Manager Damian Kelly believes tournaments like these are a great stepping stone in developing water polo in the country and is confident the Melville Sharks can attain a third success in as many years.

“The benefit of the championships is that the players get an opportunity to test themselves against the best players in Australia of a similar age and this provides vital feedback to their progress both as individuals and as a team,” Kelly said.

“The Sharks’ chances are good again this year and they have prepared well. It looks as if we are in a difficult pool with many outstanding teams from across the country but we should go well.”

The tournament gets underway on Tuesday, October 4 with the Sharks’ to begin their tournament with a first up encounter against the KFC QLD Breakers Red.

All of the boys matches will be played at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre with the preliminary rounds commencing each day at 08:00am and finishing at 15:30pm.
