2012 20 & Under National C'Ships Day 6: NSW Blues make it two gold
Men's Gold Medal
The New South Wales Blues men's team have clinched their second straight 20 & under national championship after defeating Western Australia 8-6.
The Blues got out to a commanding 8-1 lead early in the third quarter thanks to doubles from Michael de Gail and Gordon Marshall, before Western Australia fought back to close within just two on the siren courtesy of strikes from George Ford, Nick Redbond and Reg Burrows.
Anthony Hrysanthos was a standout throughout the game making numerous clutch saves, leading to his goalkeeper of the tournament honour.
Legendary New South Wales head coach Les Kay, said the Blues win was thoroughly deserved and that a number of the boys had bright futures ahead of them.
"It was a very good win in what was a clinical display by by the boys," Kay said.
"We sort of switched off in the last quarter as we were up by six at one point, but full credit to the team, it was a great team effort and everyone was fantastic.
"The week has been tremendous for their development. There is now a training camp for the boy's born '94 national squad and we have five guys in that team so that is quite an achievement.
"It is very pleasing to see the guys recognised, because they are all so young but playing at such an elite level, and for our keeper Anthony, he is only 16 and to play the way he did was awesome."
Hrysanthos was also named in the team of the tournament, along with team mates Marshall, Paul Sindone and Connor Martin.

WA and QLD score close semi final wins
The Western Australian men's and Queensland women's teams have prevailed in epic semi-final clashes to progress through to their respective gold medal matches against the two New South Wales Blues outfits.
Western Australia overcame a monumental comeback by Victoria to take out their match 10-9 in extra time.
The Western Australians were up 7-4 at three quarter time with Nick Redbond and Reg Burrows leading the way with two goals each, before Blake Edwards (4) and Matt Perrott (3) clawed their team back into the contest with pivotal goals.
Victoria were still trailing by one late in the piece, but Darcy Holdsworth pulled out the miracle equaliser with 2.2 seconds remaining to take the game into extra minutes.
However, Western Australia was able to re-group in the opening moments of extra time to jump out to a two goal lead and eventual seal the 10-9 win.
They now face New South Wales Blues for the gold, who were convincing in their easy 17-8 semi final win over Queensland. Michael de Gail starred for the Blues scoring four, while Connor Martin and Nathan Power pitched in with three.
In the fifth versus sixth playoff, New South Wales Waratahs scored only their second win of the week defeating South Australia 13-8. Alex Allan and Justin Trabinger both scored three.
The women's semi final match between Queensland and New South Wales Waratahs was also a nail biter, ending in bizarre circumstances with Queensland coming away a narrow one goal winner.
Both team's were locked together at each of the first three breaks with Emily Benson (Qld), Madeline Coburn (Qld) and Jessica Dill Macky (NSW) leading the scoring.
The scores were still tied early in the last term, before New South Wales suffered a setback with Stephanie El Safty excluded for brutality with four and a half minutes left on the clock.
To their credit the Waratahs kept fighting and were still level with two minutes remaining before Queensland edged ahead to seal the 7-6 win.
They now play New South Wales Blues in the final, who accounted for Western Australia 14-8 in an impressive display.
Morgan Baxter once again starred with three goals while Aussie Stingers' squad member Hannah Buckling furthered her quest for Olympic selection with two.
In the playoff for the bottom two placings, South Australia smashed Victoria 17-11. Lucinda Swan netted 5 while Australian Barbarians player Genevieve Venosta continued her great form with another four goal haul.

Day 4
Semi finalists decided
The Queensland women’s and NSW Blues men’s teams have topped the ladder after the preliminary rounds of the national 20 & under championships amidst a sensational battle for semi final spots in the women’s draw.
Queensland and the ‘lady’ Blues both had big wins, the team from the Sunshine state crushing the NSW Waratahs 15-8, the Blues scoring a massive 29-7 win over Victoria.
Those wins left both teams on 16 points with Queensland topping the ladder by virtue of their 6-5 victory over the Blues on Thursday.
Behind them Western Australia grabbed third spot despite an 8-7 loss today to semi finals ineligible New Zealand but the real excitement was in the tussle for the fourth and final semi final spot.
Both South Australia, who had the bye today, and the NSW Waratahs, finished the preliminary rounds equal on nine points and having played out a 7-all draw earlier in the week were forced to a tiebreaker of points differential.
They were tied on that score too before the NSW Waratahs were awarded fourth because they had more goals scored against Queensland.
In the semi finals tomorrow Queensland will play NSW Waratahs, while the Blues will play Western Australia.
In the men’s tournament, the NSW Blues won their fifth game in as many matches by defeating Victoria 12-6 to amass a maximum 15 points, two more than runner’s up Western Australia who moved to 13 points with today’s 12-5 win over South Australia.
In the day’s other game Queensland beat the NSW Waratahs 7-5, enough to finish fourth on the ladder, one place behind Victoria.
The men’s semi finals will see the Blues play Queensland and Western Australia play Victoria. The Waratahs will play South Australia in the fifth versus sixth playoff.
