Overseas Wrap: Younger scores crucial goals

Hungary:
With just two or three games to play in the Hungarian League, Szeged and Groupama-Honved recorded big wins on Saturday over number six Szolnok and number five FTC-Fisher Klima respectively. Both teams won 8-7. Number two and three in the rankings, Vasas and Szeged will match up next week in a game for second place.

The score probably doesn’t represent the game too well. We led the whole game then occasionally they would get a goal or two to come back close but we always managed to keep ahead. Defensively it was quite a good game for us as a team, the only problem was there were about 4 goals conceded from personal mistakes but these can always be worked out of the game. In attack most of the time we worked pretty well scoring on most of our opportunities, but with Szolnok being a very physical team there was quite a few attacks we played with no centre forward and led to no good shooting option. Besides these things it was a pretty good all round game. We have one more game before finals, this will be against Vasas and it will decide who will finish 2nd/3rd in the regular season.
The standings are now as follows:
1. ZF-Eger 22 - 64 pts
2. TEVA-Vasas-UNIQA 22 - 58 pts
3. Szeged Beton VE 23 - 58 pts
4. Groupama HONVÉD 22 - 54 pts
5. FTC-Fisher Klíma 23 - 42 pts
6. Szolnoki Főiskola-KÖZGÉP 22 - 40 pts
7. PVSK-Füszért 22 - 25 pts
8. Debrecen Fujitsu 22 - 20 pts
9. BVSC- Zugló 22 - 19 pts
10. Orvosegyetem Sport Club 22 - 19 pts

Eger draws, Szeged wins second place battle |
Plenty of action in the semi-final round of the regular season in the Hungarian League as leader ZF-Eger was held to a 10-10 draw by number four Groupama-Honved who scored the equaliser right before the end of regulation, and Szeged, who won the game against TEVA-Vasas-Uniqa for second place beating Vasas 8-9. The leading position for Eger is still not at risk as they hold a four point advantage over Szeged, which already played 24 games and is done for the regular season. The final round will be played next Saturday. The results of the 25th round are as follows: Aaron Younger (Szeged) 1 goal http://www.vlv.hu/media/item/12449/67-younger-golja-(vasas-szeged-bajnoki-201142) This was an important game for both teams with the winner of this finishing second on the ladder going into the finals (Top 4 go through to finals and the higher you finish on the ladder the more points you start with going into the round robin set up). We had a very good start having a 4-1 first quarter but after this they were able to catch up bringing it to 6 all then from here on it went goal for goal. We had an extra man attack with 1.30 to go in the last quarter, which we were able to convert to put us one up, from here we managed to defend an extra man against us an also a set attack to win the game. We probably won the game through defence as Vasas was awarded with a lot of kick outs and our defence was able to stop most of these. Our attack was also quite good with some nice outside shooting and two centre forward goals. All around it was a good game for us with Vasas being a strong team especially at home. The standings, with just 1 game to play are now as follows: |
Serbia:
Zak 3-9 Vojvadina
Aidan Roach (Zak) 3 exclusions earned
This was a terrible game for us only scoring 3 goals the whole game and conceding too many goals. The game started off as a dead lock with no goals scored until the last minute, we then conceded 2 quick goals to go into the first quarter trailing. The second quarter wasn't any better with us losing the 4 1, the third and fourth quarter saw the game slow down and not many goals scored. Frustrating game for us again ahead of our most important game this Friday
Greece:
Olympiacos did not have any problem against Panathinaikos this weekend in the Greek League and easily won 11-5 at Piraeus. Vouliagmeni beat Palaio Faliro 12-3 and remained in second place, whereas Panionios took advantage against Panathinaikos in the battle for third place winning against Kalamaki 19-6. In the other games, NO Patras won Ethnikos and secured its participation to the first division next year. At the same time, Chios added three more points against Larisa remaining in fifth place.
CHIOS-LARISA 14-6 (5-1, 3-2, 4-1, 2-2)
CHIOS goals: Vitelas 1, Santa 1, Chatzikiriakakis 2, Fountoulis 2, Chatzidakis 1, Kocheilas 1, Coterrill 2, Gavalas 4.
LARISA goals: Alichanidis 1, Pappas 1, Sourani 2, Gremilas 1, Koulouktsis 1.

Our first game back after a few weeks break because of Greek national team duties. We put in a convincing performance against a fairly lowly ranked team from the north of Greece. We started well winning the first quarter 5-1 and then continued on from there. We have had a few hard weeks of training to prepare for next Saturday’s game vs. Vouliagmeni and then the last 2 rounds against the top 2 teams in the league, Olympiacos and Panathinaikos.

CN Catalunya – CN Mataró Quadis 13-13 (2—4, 3—5, 3—2, 5—2)
Anthony Martin (Sabadell)
This was a very important game for us as a win meant we are now tied with Mataro for fourth place and move a few points ahead of Navarra who are next on the ladder. Mataro still needs to play the top 4 teams in the competition so they have a hard run to the finals. After losing to Navarra in the first round we knew we had to play a fast counter attack based game. We started well and were countering well, however we were unable to convert these into goals and they managed to score two goals against us. We got one back and went into the second quarter down 2-1. The second quarter we kept up the counter attack and this started to really drain them in their attack. We scored a number of both counter and set attack goals and had a strong position at 6-3 at half time. The third quarter was much the same and we managed to keep the scoring up. However we had a number of mistakes in defence which cost us goals and kept them in the game. The last quarter we started terribly and they got to within 2 goals before we pulled away in the end scoring a few late goals to make it 16-11.

This was a terrible result as the first round we beat them 22-7. We started off shaky with some sloppy shooting and slow, ineffective counter attacking. Two soft goals against us put us down 2-1 at the end of the first quarter. We rectified the situation in the second and third quarters with tight defence and moments of good shooting and counter attack. We won both quarters 3-1 and this put us 7-4 going into the last quarter. With confidence we started off the last quarter until it started to fall apart. In the space of 4 minutes we missed a 1 on none due to a dropped ball, an intercepted pass in front of the goals on a 2 on 1 and a shot in extra man that hit bar down and sat on the line. By scoring just one of these we would have looked certain to close out the game with ease. Immediately after this they scored 2 goals which gave them confidence and we were suddenly scrambling to win despite being comfortable most of the game. They scored with just 40 seconds left on extra man to draw even. Our last attack in order to win the game was stagnant and lacklustre and summed up our game. They had an extra man with just 10 second to go however we intercepted the ball and had a full field shot which went wide. We now need to win the remaining 3 games in order to secure 4th place without worrying about other results.
C.E. Mediterrani - C.N. Catalunya 6-8
C.N. Mataro Quadis - C.N. Atletic-Barceloneta 8-8
C.N. Sant Andreu - C.N. Terrassa 9-10
C.D. Waterpolo Navarra - C.N. Barcelona 11-17
Rob Maitland (Barcelona) 1 goal
A very difficult away game with a team that is just below us on the table. travelled for 7h on the bus had a little rest then started the game, We got news that Sabadell had drawn so we knew that a win would almost secure our 3rd place for the finals. We were very pumped up before the game and shot out of the blocks scoring on our first 3 attacks. Goals from extra man and counter attacks let us go to the first break at 5-1 which was always going to be very difficult for them to come back. Our set defence was working well despite the high number of exclusions and by the end of the game we had accumulated 21 exclusions. We defended extra man fairly well, they scored 4 goals but disappointingly probably another 2 or 3 as we were coming even we were a little slow to match up. After putting the gap on them in the first period however we never looked like losing and scored fairly freely. I along with most of the team was in foul trouble and we made changes regularly.

1st division:
CW Sevilla 13 - 10 CN Hospitalet
Richie Hyden (Sevilla) 1 goal, 5 assists, 6 ejections earned
Games started well with us scoring 3 goals through drives and counter to be up 3-1 at the break. We missed countless opportunities on the counter which kept the game close and we rushed our extra man giving them a chance to stay in it. In the second half we were up 5-4 but for the 4th straight game our centre back work was poor as their centre forwards were able to get good position and draw ejections. In the last quarter we were up 10-8 but poor passing in our extra man once again kept it close. In the end we slowed the game down and got the win.
CW Sevilla 10 - 13 Askatza
Richie Hyden (Sevilla) 2 goals, 1 assist, 3 ejections earned.
The pool and match was one of the worst I have seen in a while. Playing in their home pool was hard as it was 6 lanes wide, shallow at one end, and only 20 meters long. The game was a shooting frenzy the whole game with both teams taking a huge amount of shots. We started off well scoring from 5 meter fouls and counter attack and were up 7-6 at the half. In the second half the tempo of the game continued but we were unable to put shots away while everything they shot seemed to go in. With our first goalie quitting a few weeks ago we have struggled to get blocks on the defensive end and this continued this weekend. In the last quarter we were down 6 but made a 3 goal run in the last 3 minutes.

The results of the 21st round are as follows:
RN Bogliasco - RN Camogli 11-11
Tyler Martin (Camogli) 1 goal
Winning this game would move us up to fifth place while a draw would put us sixth heading into the final round. It was more or less goal for goal the entire game with Bogliasco getting a two goal lead before we got up by one with a minute to go. Unfortunately they scored a quick extra man goal to tie it up. Overall it was an average game For us as we attacked well and converted well in extra man but we didn't do a good enough job in defence.

A win against Lazio who is relegation bound would put us 6th and play Posillipo in the First week of Finals. It was a crazy game in that in the space of three minutes we had our centre forward rolled for violence with their centre forward and their goalie was rolled for disrespect. We were up 6-1 but inexplicably let them back in the game. It was goal for goal in the last quarter and we missed an extra man opportunity with fifteen seconds on the clock. We now play Savona in the first round of semis which is a very difficult match and is what we get for not giving Lazio the respect that they deserved.

Italy:
Athlon vs. Fiorentina 6-11 (Elle Armit 1 goal) (2-2, 0-3, 2-3, 2-3)
Elle Armit
Fiorentina is one of the better teams in the competition, so this game was essentially a practice game for us, as we had to win against Messina only a few days after. We started strong ending the first quarter 2-2. In the second quarter we allowed to them to have too many counter attacks. As a result, we were nervous to shoot in attack or create plays. We did however play a very successful zone on their centre forward, Casanova. She was scoreless from the centre position. Our other weakness was in 6 on 5 attack. We had 6 opportunities and we didn't score any of them.
Messina vs. Athlon 10-12 (Elle Armit 2 goals) (1-1, 4-3, 3-3, 2-5)
Elle Armit
Athlon and Bogliasco were tied for second last in the rankings, so we need to win this game in order to get ahead of them and be salvaged. Messina was without their import, Barbara Buijka as she was away with the Hungarian national team, so we had a slight upper hand. It was a tight game from the beginning, scoring goal for goal. In the second quarter they edged ahead by one and remained that way until the fourth quarter. We played very a impressive defence, and took advantage of their mistakes in attack. We played smart and hard right until the end. The girls did well considering both my self, and our captain were excluded for various reasons.
