DAY 6 MEDAL GAMES
Perth (January 23) - Queensland women upset New South Wales Blues, the winner of the past seven titles, at the national 20 years & under water polo titles at Perth's Challenge Stadium today.
But NSW Blues men made amends with an 18-6 spanking of Queensland in the men's final, bringing up a third consecutive title.
Queensland women led all the way for a 6-5 victory, the first title since 2003. The jubilant Queenslanders were spearheaded by goalkeeper Kelsey Wakefield, who blocked four penalty shots as the Queenslanders limited NSW to three goals from 15 extra-man chances.
Fellow senior international Ash Southern, who was fouled out of the game in the final quarter, netted three goals, including the shot of the tournament where she dragged back the ball above her right shoulder with her back to the goal.
Queensland led 2-1, 4-2 and 6-5 with the final period scoreless.
NSW Blues men shocked the crowd with a withering opening quarter 7-0 and progressed to 11-0 late in the second quarter before Queensland made the scoresheet before the long break.
The powerhouse team scored their first seven goals before missing on the next attack, showing their absolute class.
Paul Sindone and Alex Bennie struck four times as the Blues emerged from second place in the rounds for the crown.
The No 1 team after the rounds, Western Australia Gold, collected the men¹s bronze medal but not until after a late scare with NSW Waratahs coming back from 5-1 down to 6-5 in arrears with more than a minute remaining.
A near implosion by WA in the dying minutes, including a late call for a timeout that earned a penalty goal for the opposition, saw the Waratahs in the hunt, winning the final period 3-0.
Western Australia claimed the women's bronze medal with a 15-8 margin over Victoria. Aussie Stinger Zoe Arancini was in sensational form with seven goals while Victoria¹s response came from Emmajo Grahame with five.

DAY 5 PLAYOFFS
Perth (January 22) - New South Wales and Queensland will clash for both gold medals at the national 20 years and under water polo championships at Challenge Stadium tomorrow.
NSW Blues men dispensed with NSW Waratahs 14-3 while No 4 Queensland upsetting No 1 Western Australia Gold 8-5.
NSW Blues women sent off Victoria 19-4 and Queensland pushed aside Western Australia 15-9.
It sets up a mouth-watering finals day with both finals set to be very competitive.
Host team Western Australia, meanwhile, has bronze-medal opportunities to look forward to.
It was WA men who will be rueing a lost opportunity to regain the title last won in 2005, playing a lacklustre game and perhaps focusing too much on the final day while Queensland had the spirit and desire to make up for what has happened in the flood-ravaged State in recent weeks.
The WA women, third after the rounds, went down 15-9 to Queensland in a game where the local team struggled in the middle two periods.
Queensland was in fine form after not being able to practise in Brisbane because of the floods.
They improved with every game and the superb contribution of national senior players Ash Southern, with six goals, and a standout performance from goalkeeper Kelsey Wakefield.
Best for WA was another senior international, Zoe Arancini, who not only scored goals but earned ejections and penalty shots, and Rachel Flint and Eliesha Browne. WA will play Victoria, who lost 19-4 in the other semifinal.
Perth (January 21) - Queensland supplied a huge boost to the waterlogged State with a stirring 8-5 semifinal victory over the previously unbeaten Western Australia Gold men at the national 20 years & under water polo titles at Perth's Challenge Stadium this morning.
Queensland was always on top, thanks to a 3-0 start, which moved to a 6-3 advantage at the end of three quarters. Twice Queensland, thanks to three-goal efforts from Mason Fettell and Matt Giles, went to four-goal leads in the final quarter.
WA Gold looked flat throughout, taking poor options and losing the ball on numerous occasions through poor passing and excellent Queensland defence.
Queensland will face NSW Blues in the final after the Blues beat NSW Waratahs 14-3 in the other semifinal.
The Blues shot to a 7-1 lead and neither side let up the pace before the end of the game.
South Australia earned the right to play for fifth position with a 12-11 victory over Victoria. Aussie Shark Blake Edwards was the star for Victoria but his five-goal effort was not enough.
ROUND 7
Perth (January 21) - Kayle Leathem and Jayde Appel led New South Wales Blues to the minor premiership of the women's competition at the national 20 years & under water polo titles at Perth's Challenge Stadium this afternoon.
Playing the fifth and last preliminary round, 2009 FINA World Junior Championships player Leathem and Appel scored three goals each as the Blues moved a step closer to an eighth consecutive crown by defeating Victoria 16-2.
The Blues will replay the Victorians in tomorrow semifinals in the first-fourth encounter.
Queensland confirmed second place with a 13-6 victory over NSW Waratahs with Maddie Coburn and Olivia King netting three goals each for the Waratahs. A 4-0 opening quarter set the seal on the game while the Waratahs kept Queensland to within one goal in the middle two periods.
Western Australia kept South Australia scoreless in the middle half of the match to claim third spot and earn a clash with Queensland in tomorrow afternoon¹s semifinals. At 2-2 after the first period it looked like South Australia was in the match but solid WA defence sent the game to 7-2 by the last break.
The semifinals and finals will be streamed live on the AWPI website.

ROUND 6
Perth (January 20) - WA Gold claimed the men's minor premiership with a sixth straight win, beating South Australia 13-4 at the national 20 years & under water polo titles at Perth's Challenge Stadium this afternoon.
James Fannon, the tournament's leading goal-scorer with 18, led the charge with four goals as the Gold went through the preliminary rounds undefeated and have a bye in tomorrow's final round.
With a 4-1 opening quarter, the stage was set for a handsome win but the score only moved to 6-2 at halftime but 9-3 at the final break.
New South Wales Waratahs confirmed fourth ranking with a 6-3 win over WA Black and will progress to the finals. Nine different scorers were recorded on the sheet.
In the day's final game, Queensland downed Victoria 17-7 with Mason Fettell shooting home six goals for the winner to stay well in the hunt for the medals.
The semifinals are on Saturday and the finals on Sunday. All of these matches will be streamed live on the AWPI website.
The women had an afternoon off and play their fifth round tomorrow morning.

ROUND 5
Perth (January 20) - New South Wales Blues women survived a bad start against Western Australia to move one step closer to the minor premiership at the national 20 years & under water polo titles at Perth's Challenge Stadium this morning.
Third-placed WA led 3-2 at halftime after a goal-less first quarter but NSW Blues took a two-goal advantage into the final quarter and withstood some strong WA attacks for the 9-6 win.
Victoria gained a second victory with a 9-8 score against NSW Waratahs. The game was levelled at four and five but Victoria was never headed, turning the 3-all halftime score to 8-5 before NSW struck back for 8-7 behind at the close of the third period.
Victoria swiftly went to 9-7 at the top of the fourth through Megan Smylie on extra and then Victoria just the one goal two minutes later.
Queensland stayed unbeaten with a 17-9 romp over South Australia, Ash Southern scoring three of her four goals in the opening quarter for the Reds. The damage was done with an 8-1 lead midway through the second quarter.
WA Gold men moved to within one win of the minor premiership with an 8-6 margin over NSW Waratahs. To the Waratahs' credit, it was a close match in the final quarter, having bounced back from 5-0 down late in the second quarter to 7-6 behind halfway through the final period. Nick Redbond struck the decisive goal at 1:23 and WA Gold was safe.
WA Black scored its first win with an 11-8 success over winless Victoria.
Blake Edwards, just named to the Aussie Sharks team to play the Volvo Cup in Hungary next month, scored four goals for Victoria but even his strength was not enough against a vastly improved WA Black, who shot to 11-7 after Victoria equalised at 7-7 in the final second of the third period.
Second-ranked NSW Blues sent off third-placed Queensland 15-5 with Connor Martin scoring five goals for the victors.

ROUND 4
Perth (January 19) - SA's Thomas Dayman rattled in three of his four goals in the last quarter but it wasn't enough to catch the New South Wales Waratahs at the national 20 years & under water polo titles at Perth's Challenge Stadium this afternoon.
Playing a fourth-round game, it was a crucial clash as both teams are mid-table and searching for fourth spot in the men's section ahead of Saturday's semifinals.
The Waratahs led 4-3 at the quarter and 7-4 by halftime. With a 10-4 lead at the final break, the game was virtually over but Thomas Dayman had a three-goal revival that brought some respectability to the score.
Ladder leader WA Gold raced through Victoria with two 4-1 quarters and then 6-0 in the third for a rollicking 14-2 lead before taking the foot off the accelerator.
NSW Blues, rebounding from a 5-4 loss to WA Gold in the morning, thrashed a strong WA Black 14-2.
The women had the afternoon off and will play their round-four matches tomorrow morning.
ROUND 3
Perth (January 19) - NSW Blues' Bre Appel scored twice in the last quarter to surge her unbeaten women's team to a 9-6 victory over fellow title favourite Queensland at the national 20 years & under water polo titles at Perth's Challenge Stadium this morning.
Appel, who debuted at senior level at the FINA World Championships in Rome two years ago, scored firstly from the penalty line and then on extra-man advantage to take NSW to an unbeatable 9-5 lead inside the last four minutes.
National senior star Ash Southern didn't see out the game, gaining her third major foul four minutes from time after scoring three goals for Queensland.
NSW was only behind once at the start of the game but was on top midway through the period, only to see Queensland draw level at 5-all early in the third period.
NSW Blues' final hurdle to the minor premiership is against Western Australia tomorrow morning.
In other women's games, WA blasted past Victoria 16-6 and South Australia scored two seconds from time to secure an 8-all draw with NSW Waratahs after leading 6-3 at one stage.
In men's play, reigning champion NSW Blues went down to hosts WA Gold 5-4.
The shock result for a team that frequently knows how to stand on the top of the dais, saw NSW scoreless in the first half as WA went ahead 3-0.
NSW won the next two periods 2-1 but it was not enough. WA went 5-3 up with less than three minutes left on the clock only to have NSW respond through Connor Martin on the next attack.
However, as NSW Blues coach Les Kay said, it was the strong WA defence in the first half that proved the difference.
WA Gold now sits atop the ladder with more points on offer against Victoria this afternoon and just NSW Waratahs tomorrow to complete its preliminary programme.
South Australia and Victoria battled through their match with both looking tired in the second quarter before SA triumphed 10-9 with a Thomas Dayman goal inside the final two minutes.
Queensland turned a 4-1 first half to beat WA Black 5-2 in what was a tight encounter.

ROUND 2
NSW Blues won a game of attrition over South Australia in session two at the national 20 years and under championships in Perth this afternoon.
The Blues triumphed 29-6 over an under-manned South Australia who had three players fouled out of the game by 18 seconds into the final quarter and then played one short, which the Blues capitalised on with 11 goals.
Legendary NSW head coach Les Kay said it was all about keeping the guys focused and not wanting to act as individuals in that final period.
WA Gold struck first blood against Queensland in what is considered two of the top three teams.
WA Gold won 9-3 in a game where opposition coach Simon Daley was ejected from the pool on a red card in the fourth period, meaning he will miss tomorrow morning¹s clash with the other WA team, WA Black.
WA Gold led 4-2 at halftime and 6-3 after three periods and always looked in control, especially with some power outside shots from James Fannon, who finished with five goals.
NSW Waratahs worked tirelessly to defeat Victoria 8-7, breaking a 7-7 deadlock with a Hamish Cuthill goal 1:20 from time.
The Waratahs trailed 4-3 at halftime but led 6-5 at the final break.
In women's play, NSW Blues, led by Bre Appel¹s four goals, sent off South Australia 17-6.
WA scored a hard-fought 12-8 victory over NSW Waratahs with the 4-0 opening quarter the main factor in the win. NSW levelled the second quarter 2-2 and won the third 4-3.
WA had the worse of the foul count, registering 14 fouls to NSW¹s four but managed to only let in three extra-man goals and two penalty goals.
In the third match, Queensland beat Victoria 21-12. The Queenslanders, rebounding from the massive floods and lack of training facilities, warmed up in the morning and hit top gear in the final quarter with a 10-1 period, blowing out the score.
Ash Southern scored six for Queensland and Emma Jo Grahame slotted five for Victoria.
ROUND 1
Victorian ace Emma Jo Grahame hammered in seven goals in her team's opening 13-11 victory over South Australia at the national 20 years and under championships in Perth this morning.
National squad member Grahame was to the fore in all quarters, scoring five in the middle two periods.
Younger sister Amber scored three in the second half as Victoria moved from 2-1 at the quarter to 5-2 at halftime and 11-6 after three periods.
South Australia rallied with a 5-2 final quarter, headed by five-goal hero Alexandra Thomas with two.
Reigning champion New South Wales Blues made short shrift of NSW Waratahs, winning 18-7 with Emily Scott, Shannon Jones and Bre Appel netting three goals each.
Queensland turned a 4-3 halftime deficit into a 9-8 victory over Western Australia in a heavy-fouling encounter .
Queensland barely had the better of the foul count at 14-17. Maddie Coburn¹s penalty goal a minute from time gave Queensland a 9-7 buffer.
WA replied quickly through Chloe Nella and an extra-man opportunity 11 seconds from time saw a shot fired wide, giving Queensland the win.
In the men's division, NSW Blues, winners for the past two years, defeated NSW Waratahs 12-5, Queensland beat South Australia 11-7 and Western Australia Gold had the better of WA Black 7-4.

Perth (January 14) - The Queensland floods have thrown up a dilemma for youngsters competing at the national 20 & under water polo championships in Perth from next Tuesday.
The Queensland teams have been hit badly with floods with three women's players directly affected with bad damage to their properties and two others evacuated.
On top of this, local pools have been closed and the teams have not been able to train making them not as competitive as they would have liked.
Queensland junior women's coach Scott Schweickle said all his team members were determined to make it to Perth.
"However, if they can physically make it to the airport is the next question. We have an 8:05am flight and the players said they would do their best to make the airport. One said she would make it by a roundabout way."
Junior men's coach Simon Daley said his team members were spared any major flooding damage but some parents' businesses were inundated.
"Come hell or high water, we will be there," said the coach ahead of his team's first training camp on the Sunshine Coast this Sunday.
