Davie, son of former New Zealand international John, will take up a scholarship at a California university following touring with the Australian junior men's team next month.

He was one of the standouts at last year's 17 & Under FINA world championships in Croatia.

NSW led 6-4 at halftime and was always in front but did allow Victoria's Jarrod Gilchrist to score a hat-trick in the final quarter.

Queensland claimed the bronze medal with a solid 11-3 victory over Western Australia, who only lost its semifinal to NSW in the dying seconds.

NSW Blues women made it seven years on top with a 13-8 margin over Queensland, thanks to five goals from Aussie Stinger Nicola Zagame.

Fresh from a penalty-shootout FINA World League final in California, Zagame amassed 25 goals for the week and not surprisingly was named most valuable player.

The Blues led 5-0 early and never looked like letter Queensland back into the game.

Western Australia held off NSW Waratahs 11-9 for the bronze medal.

Awards:

Men: Most valuable player: Jeremy Davie (NSW). Goalkeeper of the tournament: Eddie Slade (WA). Highest goal-scorers: Jarrod Gilchrist (VIC), Daniel Young (QLD) 16.

Martin monster clips WA in  20 & Under Nationals semifinals
Melbourne (July 10).—

A Tyler Martin outside missile secured New South Wales Blues men a gold-medal-final berth against Victoria at the national 20 years and under water polo nationals at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.

The newly elevated Aussie Shark international took the opportune shot to beat Western Australia 6-5 with just 12 seconds remaining in the game for his third goal.

WA earlier won the elimination final 13-7 over South Australia before taking on the fresh champion in the afternoon, leading 4-3 at halftime and 5-4 at the final break.

NSW shot back to level the game at 5-5 through Paul Sindone at 1:46 and then Martin's last-gasp winner sent NSW to tomorrow's final.

Victoria needed extra time to get past Queensland. With the game locked at 8-all after regular time, Blake Edwards (VIC) and Lyndon Cranley (QLD), on penalty, scored in the first period before Edwards scored on action and Jarrod Gilchrist sealed the result with a penalty goal for a two-goal difference.

In the women's section, NSW Blues thumped NSW Waratahs 18-3 in one semifinal while Queensland nailed a 5-1 third period to get past WA 9-6.

WA led 4-2 at halftime but Queensland restricted the Sandgropers to just two goals in the second half.

NSW dominate rounds at 20 & Under Nationals
Melbourne (July 9).—

New South Wales went through the preliminary round unscathed at the national 20 years and under water polo nationals in Melbourne this week.

The Blues men looked unbeatable with a large number of junior internationals in their ranks along with senior international Tyler martin, who scored four goals against South Australia.

The Blues will play the winner of tomorrow's WA-SA eliminator in the afternoon semifinals. No 2 Victoria will play No 3 Queensland in the other semifinal.

Queensland dumped South Australia 18-9 with Aussie Shark Daniel Young unbeatable with seven goals while BJ Howden, the national youth captain last year, nailed four of his own.

NSW Blues women will take on fourth-ranked NSW Waratahs in tomorrow's semifinals while the No 2 Queensland will clash with Western Australia.

NSW Blues and WA fought out a tight final match 13-10 while Queensland went on the rampage against South Australia, winning 24-6.

The Waratahs battled to a 9-all draw with Victoria but finished with the better goal differential to make the semifinals.

Ziggy on fire at 20 & Under Nationals
Melbourne (July 8).—

Nicola Zagame is showing her maturity in the junior level of women's water polo following a stellar week in California.

Just returned from winning the FINA World League Super Finals silver medal with the Aussie Stingers in San Diego, Zagame showed her class with a seven-goal haul for New South Wales Blues at the national 20 & Under nationals here today.

Zagame was the scoring record holder for the NWPL last season and bettered that mark this year only to see her team-mate, Dutch Olympic champion Mieke Cabout, clinch the record.

"Ziggy" Zagame rattled in the seven goals against Queensland in the 16-8 victory.

She was ably assisted by fellow silver medallists Keesja Gofers, with four, and Alicia Brightwell with a goal of her own.

The champion NSW Blues are on target for another crown while Western Australia and Queensland are battling for second ranking ahead of the finals.

WA headed off Victoria 11-8 thanks to four goals from Australian junior Eleisha Browne and a pair from Aussie Stinger Zoe Arancini.

In men's matches, 10 NSW Blues players scored goals as they routed Victoria 15-6.

Victoria leads the ladder after an 11-10 victory over Queensland but NSW has games in hand and must be favoured to retain their title.

WA is handily placed in third with a 10-7 win over South Australia.

Melbourne (July 8).— It's day 3 of the 2010 National Championships Junior Men/Junior Women 20 Years & Under (Born 1990 or later). The Championships are being held in Melbourne VIC 6-11 July 2010 at Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre.

Stingers show class at 20 & Under Nationals
Melbourne (July 7).—

Returning senior women's stars bolstered the ranks of competing teams at the national 20 and under water polo championships at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre today.

New South Wales gained the most with Nicola Zagame (6) and Alicia Brightwell (3) scoring freely in the NSW Blues' 24-7 whipping of South Australia.

The pair was in a group of players back from winning silver with the Aussie Stingers senior women at the FINA World League Super Finals in California on Saturday and competing in their first matches of the junior event.

Zagame, who made her big-time debut at last year's FINA World Championships in Rome last year, blasted in six goals in the 24-7 romp over South Australia.

She was at it again in the afternoon as the Blues defeated Victoria 24-4, scoring six more.

Zoe Arancini, another silver medallist, scored three as her Western Australian team beat NSW Waratahs 14-10 in the morning and four in the 15-11 victory over South Australia in the afternoon.

In men's competition, Victoria leads the way with two victories, including a 12-7 win over Western Australia today thanks to Aussie Shark Jarrod Gilchrist with five goals.
