NSW dominates 20 and under national titles Perth
New South Wales retained both titles at the Australian 20 years and under water polo championships at Challenge Stadium here today.
The men beat Queensland 9-4 and the women comfortably defeated Western Australia 7-2.
WA men beat Victoria 9-7 for bronze and Victoria upset Queensland women 5-3 for the minor medal.
Queensland put up some dogged resistance against a far more fancied side in the men’s final but in the end NSW had the firepower and experience.
Player-of-the-tournament Richard Campbell controlled the game while team-mate Joel Dennerley played to his usual high standard and was named the best goalkeeper.
The NSW women dominated early and left WA choosing poor options.
Despite a one-goal difference in the preliminary rounds, NSW lifted for the final and took the first quarter 2-0, not allowing WA into the game until late in the second period.
Two late goals by WA had the game at 4-2 by halftime but then NSW stepped up and shut down the WA attack for the rest of the game.
Captain Jenna Santoromito was impressive throughout, taking the tournament’s most-valuable-player award with NSW’s Commonwealth champion Danielle Bower the best goalkeeper.
WA claimed the men’s bronze medal, leading Victoria 3-2 and 5-4 at the first two breaks before stretching the margin to 7-5 heading into the last period.
WA skipper Nick O’Halloran scored two of his five goals to have WA at a commanding 9-6 lead as WA cruised to the medal.
Queensland will be ruing lost chances in the women’s bronze medal with the Victorians making the most of their opportunities for one of their best results in years.
Following the championships the national squads were named from whom the teams will be selected for this year’s FINA World Championships in Long Beach, USA (men) and Porto, Portugal (women).
(January 25).—
NSW to meet Queensland and WA in gold-medal finals Perth
New South Wales men and women will play Queensland and Western Australia respectively in the gold-medal finals of the Australian 20 years and under water polo championships at Challenge Stadium here tomorrow.
In semifinal action today, NSW moved a step closer to retaining its men’s crown with a 14-7 romp over Victoria with nine NSW players making the scoresheet.
Queensland earned a final berth by repulsing a last-gasp challenge from Western Australia for a 12-8 score.
WA came within one goal early in the final quarter after being 5-2 down at halftime but could not maintain the impetus. NSW women had a stroll in the park with a 14-4 defeat of Victoria.
The other semifinal was much closer with WA holding out a late-charging Queensland 8-7.
WA nearly let the game slip after being 8-5 up, allowing Queenslanders Carrie Fettes and Sarah Mills to score inside a minute.
However, WA closed ranks and kept Queensland at bay for two minutes until the final whistle.
The national junior squads will be named for this year’s FINA World Championships following the championships.
Perth (January 25).—
New South Wales finished undefeated in both men’s and women’s sections after the preliminary rounds of the Australian 20 years and under water polo championships at Challenge Stadium here today.
In both cases they will play Victoria in the semifinals tomorrow while Queensland and Western Australia will contest the other semifinals.
NSW men finished their campaign with a 14-4 victory over Tasmania this morning with senior international Richard Campbell top-scoring with four goals for the victor.
Queensland finished second, downing fifth-ranked South Australia 19-9, while third-placed Western Australia beat Victoria 12-9, thanks to a three-goal haul to Daniel Lawrence.
NSW women sent the Australian 16s team packing 10-2 with the latter side ineligible for the finals despite finishing third equal on points but fifth on goal countback.
Second-placed WA, with World Cup champion Gemma Beadsworth scoring five, downed Victoria 12-7. Third-ranked Queensland was untroubled against South Australia with Cassie Grayson scoring five goals in the 9-3 victory.
The medal finals are on Saturday with the national junior squads being named for this year’s FINA World Championships.
(January 24).- Miller does the damage for Queensland over WA men
Perth Queensland's Billy Miller hammered the nail in Western Australia's coffin when he scored five goals for Queensland at the Australian 20 years and under water polo championships at Challenge Stadium here today.
Queensland took the game early against the 2005 champion, winning both opening quarters for a 6-3 lead with junior international Miller dominant throughout.
Queensland is well placed for the semifinals in a crowded field with New South Wales clearly the best team and Victoria and WA the others jostling for positions.
The Australia 16 and under team, currently second on the ladder, is ineligible for the finals.
In women's play, WA women kept their titled hopes alive with a 9-5 victory over Queensland after holding just a two-goal lead at three-quarter time.
Zoe Arancini top-scored with four for WA.
NSW had the bye this morning but last night had to work for a 7-3 victory over Victoria after being only 4-2 ahead going into the final period.
The semifinals are on Friday and the finals on Saturday.
Perth (January 23).—
New South Wales women had to come from 8-7 down to beat Western Australia 12-11 in the Australian 20 years and under water polo championships at Challenge Stadium here today.
In a high-class match containing a handful of World Cup and Commonwealth champions, NSW nearly let the game go twice as WA surged back from 3-0 down to lead 5-4 in the second quarter and 8-7 in the third.
But it was the experience of the NSW women that shone through with Keejsa Gofers grabbing two goals in the final quarter as NSW shot to a 12-8 lead. NSW men gained their third win when they downed WA 14-4, a big margin considering WA lost the title to NSW last year.
The Australian 16s teams are having a good run, both sitting second in the ladders with the boys beating South Australia 12-9 and the girls winning 14-5 over SA.
The championships double as trials for this year’s FINA World Junior Championships in Porto, Portugal for women in July and Long Beach, USA for men in August.
Perth (January 22).—NSW starts strongly at 20 and under nationals New South Wales made its intentions clear with strong victories over Queensland in the opening round of the Australian 20 years and under water polo championships at Challenge Stadium here today.
The men won 11-7 and the women 13-7 as they started the defence of their titles. South Australia men beat Tasmania 16-14 in a tight encounter but it was Tasmania who won the women’s clash 9-7 after being a goal down heading into the final quarter. The national 16 years and under teams played with the boys beating Victoria 11-6 and the girls losing to Victoria 11-5. The championships double as trials for this year’s FINA World Junior Championships in Porto, Portugal for women in July and Long Beach, USA for men in August.
