The historic victory was achieved with a 6-3 result over a newcomer to a national final — Brisbane’s All Hallows School — and went one better than last year's one-goal loss to Perth's Dolphins.
Both teams emerged from the same group, having drawn their encounter in
the preliminary round with All Hallows gaining top spot with a better
goal differential.
The opening quarter was squared at one but Hunter made a move in the
second with a 4-1 lead at halftime, which became 6-2 after three
periods.
Player-of-the-series Georgie McConville, who played and scored from all
over the field, had four goals up before the final period.
The bronze-medal final was staged between two multiple winners with the medal going to Cronulla A over Melville 6-2.
The boys’ crown was won by Perth’s Melville Sharks, who collected their
fourth title in seven years with a 9-5 victory over three-times
champion Cronulla, of Sydney.
Melville dominated in the first half with a 6-1 lead that became 6-3 by the final break.
Cronulla enhanced its scoring when goalkeeper Thomas Freeman scored a
length-of-the-field goal to beat the third-quarter buzzer, breathing
some life into the game.
However, Cronulla had to contend with Andre Rebelo in top flight for
Melville, scoring four goals with pairs in the second and fourth
periods.
The title goes with Melville’s wins in 2004, ’05 and ’07. The bronze was won by Sydney's Drummoyne — 4-2 over KFC Queensland Breakers A.

Brisbane (April 4).— Two teams who have won six of the last nine titles will clash in the final of the Australia 14 and under boys’ water polo championships here tomorrow.
Sydney’s Cronulla won the crown in 2001, ‘03 and ‘08 while Perth’s Melville won in 2004, ‘05 and ‘07.
Cronulla made the final with a 6-4 win over KFC Queensland Breakers A while Melville had a slightly easier victory, beating Drummoyne 8-3.
In contrast, the girls’ final will go to two teams who have not even made a final before — Newcastle’s Hunter Hurricanes and Brisbane’s All Hallows.
Hunter defeated four-time champion Cronulla 3-1 while All Hallows put paid to Melville’s hopes of claiming a third crown with an emphatic 7-2 scoreline.
Day 3 report:
Brisbane (April 4).— The 14 and under national water polo championships have reached the critical stage with semifinals day tomorrow.
Cronulla boys will play KFC Queensland Breakers A in one semifinal while Perth’s Melville Sharks will take on Sydney’s Drummoyne in the other.
Drummoyne and Cronulla drew their preliminary round encounter but Cronulla had the better goal differential to finish atop Group A and get the “easier” semifinal.
Melville finished four points clear of its group with six straight victories.
In girls’ competition one match had to be replayed after a successful protest over a goal that went through a hole in the net being missed by the officials.
Hunter Hurricanes beat Perth’s Dolphins White in the rematch 8-1 to secure second place on equal points with Brisbane’s All Hallows but with a slightly inferior goal differential. Two more goals would have been enough to top the group.
Thus All Hallows will face Perth’s Melville in one semifinal while Group A winner Cronulla A, from Sydney, will clash with Hunter.
Day 2 report:
Brisbane (April 3).— Perth’s Melville made a statement with a solid 6-1 victory over Brisbane school Stuartholme during girls’ competition at the national 14 and under club water polo championships in Brisbane yesterday.
The pair leads Group A on equal points but Melville has a game in hand over the team, which earlier beat Perth’s Dolphins Blue 9-3.
Group B sees Brisbane’s All Hallows atop the ladder alongside Newcastle’s Hunter Hurricanes on nine points.
Melville also holds a strong position in the boys’ section with a clear three-point advantage in Group B.
In a big day, Melville beat Brisbane’s Tugun-Barracudas 11-6, KFC Queensland Breakers A 11-2 and Sydney’s UNSW Wests Magpies 13-0.
In Group A, the situation is evenly matched with Melbourne Collegians, Queensland’s Sunshine Coast and Sydney teams Cronulla and Drummoyne all on 11 points.
