Sydney (July 3).— Cardno Ecology Lab Cronulla Sharks today announced the signing of star Beijing Olympic Gold Medallist Mieke Cabout (23) of the Netherlands for the coming 2009/10 season.
Cabout, who is currently preparing to compete with the Dutch Team at the FINA World Championships in Rome this month, will arrive in Australia in August, early enough to participate in the Sharks Boot Camp pre-season training.
Sharks VP John Zagame said “Mieke Cabout’s decision to play in Australia attests Cronulla Water Polo Club’s long history and enviable international reputation.“
“Cabout could go to any country she wanted to play polo but she chose to come here to Australia.
“It’s unlikely that marquee players like Cabout would take the trip down-under without the attraction of the strong Australian National Water Polo League competition.
“The Dutch have entrusted one of their golden girls to us so we’ll look after her well and show her the shire lifestyle , which continues to produce an inordinate amount of sporting wealth.“
Mieke will participate in Cronulla’s academy youth development programme. “Like our home-grown Olympians, Macca (Alicia McCormack), Mia and Jenna (Santoromito), she’ll be idolised by the younger kids and her involvement will be invaluable.”
Anxious fans won’t need to wait for the National Water Polo League to commence in February to get their first glimpse of Cabout because she’ll be playing first in the NSW Water Polo Metropolitan summer competition.
