Sydney (June 6).— The UNSW Killer Whales Water Polo Club won the most prizes at the 56th Annual Blues & Sports Awards Dinner held in the Leighton Hall of the John Niland Scientia (UNSW) on Friday 29 May 2009.

Setting the tone for the rest of the evening, Honorary Treasurer Peppi Kearney was presented with a Sports Recognition Award for her contribution to sport at the University.

Following his talk, the Special Guest Mark Taylor presented the major sports awards for the year.  First winner was Andrew Yanitsas as Coach of the Year, followed later by Corrie Eames as Male Athlete of the Year.

The MC, Peter FitzSimons, warned there would not be much applause for the final award but was proved wrong when the Club of the Year was announced as Water Polo!!  There was indeed huge applause from the whole room.  Club President Jo Holecek was thrilled to accept the award for the club.

Although absent representing Australia at the World League in New Zealand, Johnno Cotterill was awarded a coveted Blue for his achievements in water polo.

Cradling the trophy for Club of the Year, Water Polo Club President Jo Holecek commented “We were very pleased to have nominations in 5 of the 6 categories.  Such a result goes to show the depth of talent both in and out of the water.  This is a credit to all of those people in the club who have worked over the years to strengthen both the playing and administration aspects of the Killer Whales.

"Winning Club of the Year is awesome, but don’t forget our other nominees Peppi Kearney for Administrator of the Year and the Men’s AUG side for Team of the Year, who were equally deserving of their nomination.”
