Beijing, China, August 8 — The Australian water polo teams fine-tuned their training at outside venues today in preparation for the start of 2008 Olympic Games competition.

Both teams had training away from the spotlight of the main competition pool, Yingdong Natatorium, as it was closed because of the close proximity to the National Stadium where the Opening Ceremony will be staged tonight.

The Aussie Sharks are expected to play a training game at Yingdong at 5pm tomorrow against possibly Germany before clashing with Greece in the tournament opener the following afternoon.

Aussies on the scene include Debbie Watson and Sharan Wheelock who have roles with broadcasting. Debbie will be a co-commentator for Channel 7 and Sharan is spotting for the host broadcaster, BOB, from a privileged position behind the scorebench. Both were members of the 1995 Sydney FINA World Cup-winning team.

AWPI Secretary General John Whitehouse is ensconced in his position as Honorary Secretary of the FINA Technical Water Polo Committee.

AWPI Media Manager Russell McKinnon is working at Yingdong as the Sport Information Specialist for water polo's Olympic News Service team.

Make sure to check out the SBS schedule for games on television and drop in on www.nbc.com for three games being streamed daily, including the USA match.

Keep an eye on AWPI's website for results of the Australian games website soon after they happen.

The weather in Beijing today is hot and sticky with visibility poor.

Aussie teams hit Beijing training venues today
Beijing, China (August 7).—

The Australian water polo teams trained in Beijing today ahead of the opening matches of the Olympic Games tournament on Sunday (men)  and Monday (women).

The women trained at the 6000-seat Yingdong Natatorium while the men trained at another venue in the north-eastern quadrant of the city where up to 13 universities are situated.

Head coach Greg McFadden said he was pleased finally to be in Beijing and the team looked sharp during a one-hour training session.

The women were not available for comment as the team had to shift to the Olympic Village for the traditional Flag Raising Ceremony for the Australian team.

The men will train in the Yingdong competition pool on Saturday prior to their first game against Greece on Sunday.
Yingdong will be shut down tomorrow in a huge security clamp in preparation for the Opening Ceremony tomorrow night.
