Auckland (July 24).— Drummoyne Water Polo Club collected gold defeating North Harbour 5-3 in the girls' Under 14 final at 2008 Panasonic Pan Pacific Youth Festival in Auckland. In a nail biting finish Drummoyne held a 2 goal advantage after leading 3-1 at the main break. Drummoyne captain Stephanie Polivka opened the scoring with a penalty, North Harbour drew level, before Maddy Wilson scored her first goal before tournament MVP Shannan Martin gave Drummoyne a 2 goal cushion at half time.

North Harbour came out firing in the 3rd quarter to tie the game up at 3 apiece at three quarter time. Drummoyne edged ahead taking a 1 goal lead midway through the final quarter with a goal to Karlee Asseff  before Maddy Wilson scored her second goal in the final stages of the game for a well earned victory to the Drummoyne Devils

The Drummoyne girls receiving a rousing reception from the predominant NZ crowd and winning gold has capped off a great year for the young team after winning silver in 3 tournaments during the season. “The girls played really well through the entire tournament and the experience they gained will be invaluable,” according to former Australian representative Jenny MacGregor who coached the team this year. “The Drummoyne club has some fantastic junior talent who are an important component in the future success of the club as it plans to enter the National League Womens competition.

The successful season was made sweeter by the fact that all the girls have come though the Drummoyne’s highly successful sub junior water polo development program. The program which started soon after the Sydney Olympics has become one of the most successful junior water polo programs in Australia.
