Syros, Greece (July 14).— Australia needed a protracted penalty shootout to beat Montenegro for the bronze medal at the Vikelas Cup youth boys’ water polo tournament on the island of Syros yesterday.
The game was locked at 7-7 and 8-8 after fulltime and extra time and
went to an eighth penalty shot with Australia scoring and Montenegro
missing for the Aussie youngsters to win 15-14.
They missed out on topping their group in the eight-nation event by
losing to eventual winner Croatia 11-9 in their third match after
beating Italy 12-5 and Serbia 11-8.

Youth boys clean up in German tournament
Hannover, Germany (July 8).—
Australia’s youth boys’ water polo team claimed the Bernhard Baier Cup
here at the weekend, beating three of the world’s leading nations.

Australia thrashed Russia 16-6, Italy 10-6 and Germany 15-8 with
Fremantle Mariners star Aaron Younger being named player of the
tournament, scoring 12 goals.
As Younger had already won an award, Wests’ Wade
Eames was awarded the tournament’s top scorer with 11 goals in the
tournament, which saw some of the world’s leading 16 and 17-year-olds
in action.

Youth boys in tour-opening win over Germany
Hildesheim, Germany (July 3).—
Perth youngster Aaron Younger spearheaded Australia to an 11-6 youth boys’ water polo victory over Germany here last night.
Younger, who plays for Fremantle Mariners in the National Water Polo
League, slotted four goals as the Aussies opened their European tour.
Australia led 2-1, 6-4 and 7-5 at the breaks before swimming away in the final period.
Australia converted two from seven on extra compared to Germany's one from four. There were 300 spectators at the match.
