Tianjin, China (May 26).— Australia kept their unbeaten record in China intact with a comprehensive 19-3 win over Japan last night to finish the FINA World League rounds here in Tianjin and qualify for the Super Finals in Spain next month.
This was built on a 4-0 opening quarter where our counter-attack and strong defence suffocated the Japanese.
This was repeated in the 2nd & 3rd quarters with 4-0 and 5-0 scorelines.
It look liked Australia was going to keep a clean sheet as it scored
six unanswered goals in the 4th quarter but unfortunately with 2.11
left in the game Australia stopped defending and allowed the Japanese
to fire in three easy goals.
Assistant Coach Ryan Moar was visibly annoyed after the game and said:
“We had done everything so well and to let what happened in the last
two minutes was inexcusable. The players have to learn to concentrate
for 32 minutes not 30 minutes.”
Head coach Greg McFadden announced Gemma Beadsworth as the player of the tour.

Fifth win qualifies Stingers for Super Finals
Tianjin, China (May 25).—
Once again Australia and China fought out a very intense game of water polo here in the FINA World League Asia-Oceania segment.
ustralia started promising with a 3-0 early onslaught in the 1st 3.30
minutes after goals two Bronwen Knox and a Patrice O’Neill goal, but to
China’s credit they composed themselves and levelled the scores at 3-3
by the end of the 1st quarter.
China then scored early in the 2nd to take their 1st and only lead of
the game before Australia responded with another 3-goal onslaught from
a Mia Santoromito and two Gemma Beadsworth goals. However, this was
answered by another 2 goals from China before Australia responded with
1.21 on the clock through Kate Gynther for an 8-7 halftime lead.
The 3rd quarter was a drag it out all in with the only goal coming from
China after 1.55 then for the remaining 6.05 both teams were scoreless
and totally buggered.
The last quarter saw Australia’s 2 best players of the evening stand up
and make sure that Australia’s unbeaten record in China remained in
tact with a Gynther steal and brilliant CA goal, which was immediately
replied to by an easy china CF goal. Kate Gynther then stepped up again
with an extra goal with 4.35 left before China once again levelled at
2.41.
Then the best junior player in the world, Beadsworth, came back to
haunt the country and team that she played a huge role in defeating on
Australia’s way to winning the junior world championships in 2007 by
scoring a fantastic centre forward goal with 2.11 left.
Australia repelled China’s final attacks and held on for the win that
would qualify them for the World League Finals in Spain in 2 weeks.
Coach Greg McFadden said: “Once again today was very frustrating as we
started fantastically but filed to maintain the advantage that we
created. The most pleasing part was a lot of girls were exhausted but
dug deep and made sure that we got the result we wanted.”
“The most pleasing part was that Katie (Gynther) and Gemma
(Beadswoirth) really stepped up in this game and hopefully are back on
track to playing the way that I hope they expect themselves to play”.
“The two of them were fantastic.”

Stingers defeat China B 16-2
Tianjin, China (May 24).—
Australia played a very positive 1st 3 quarters against the Chinese B
team last night and came up with a well deserved 16-2 win in the FINA
World League.
The 1st quarter 5-0 score line was very impressive and was repeated again in the 2nd.
With another 4-0 score line in the 3rd Australia was looking good for
their reward of a Chinese dumpling dinner, but unfortunately a 2-2
final quarter certainly didn’t impress the coaching staff so they ended
up having a cold steak and hamburger instead at TGI Friday’s.
Assistant Coach Alexandr Osadchuk said: “I’ll have the flat iron 8 inch
steak with garlic mash potatoes” and assistant coach Ryan Moar said:
“I’ll have the Friday’s BBQ’d ribs with coleslaw and fries” while head
coach Greg McFadden was out the back heating up the meals in the
microwave.

Third straight win for Stingers in World League
Tianjin, China (May 23).—
Australia took one more step closer to qualifying for the FINA World
League Super Finals with a 17-4 win over Japan here last night.
This was built on a 6-0 opening quarter where our counter-attack
converted 4 of these. Goalkeeper Emma Knox made 4 crucial saves in the
1st quarter that allowed us to convert these opportunities.
The 2nd quarter saw the Japanese come out fighting and hold Australia
to a 5-3 quarter mainly due to too many missed opportunities from poor
passing and giving away possession so that it allowed the Japanese way
too many easy possessions.
The 3rd quarter Australia experimented with its defence and controlled
the quarter for a 3-1 score and then another 3-0 quarter, which saw
Australia win 17-4.
Coach McFadden said: “Today was very frustrating as we never settled
into the game we wanted to play and were continually chasing our tail.
Full credit to the Japanese who are continually improving and I think
lady luck was on our side today and not theirs.”
“Our defence was quite good but our attack certainly needs lots of work if we are going to be a serious threat in Beijing.

Aussie Stingers survive World League scare
Tianjin, China (May 22).—
On a night the mighty NSW Rugby league team produced an upset the
Chinese women’s team almost repeated the dose against the Australian
Stingers here in Tianjin last night.
Competing in the Asia-Oceania segment of the FINA World League, in an
epic struggle the Chinese could feel very unlucky not to come a way
with their first win over Australia as they keep improving for their
own Olympics.
Australia opened the scoring at 5.32 with a Beadsworth extra but China
quickly answered and was quite unlucky not to go to the 1st break with
a better lead than 2-1 after quite a few missed CA opportunities.
The 2nd quarter was very similar to the 1st and China seemed to have
the run of the play but failed to capitalise on their opportunities and
luckily for Australia a late Bronwen Knox goal on extra brought the
score back to 3-2 at the halftime break.
China opened the scoring early in the 3rd to go 4-2 up after a CA goal
but Australia gradually grinded its way back into the game and
equalised with 1.23 remaining after goals to Mel Rippon and another
Beadsworth extra tied the game up, however, another goal maintained the
advantage for the Chinese at the end of the 3rd for a 5-4 shoreline.
Australia finally showed some form of sanity in their play and a
Gynther CA goal levelled it up before China grabbed an outside shot to
goal before a Bec Rippon CA levelled the score again. Then with 12
seconds remaining Australia scored what they thought was a winner with
a Knox CF goal but China had other ideas and with no time on the clock
Sun Huizi scored a 5m double-wood goal.
This took the game to a penalty shoot out and the Chinese couldn’t
handle the pressure and missed their 1st shot with a two-handed save by
McCormack which was followed by a Gynther goal. China scored their next
as did Hadley for Australia. China then missed their next 2 penalties
through a save and a hit post while Knox and Beadsworth converted their
penalties to allow Australia to remain undefeated on Chinese soil and
continue their winning run in the pool that saw them win the 2006 World
Cup.
Coach McFadden said “Today was very frustrating as we never settled
into the game we wanted to play and were continually chasing our tail.
Full credit to the Chinese who are continually improving and I think
lady luck was on our side today and not there’s.”
“Our defence was quite good but our attack certainly needs lots of work if we are going to be a serious threat in Beijing.

Aussie Stingers open World League campaign with big win
Tianjin, China (May 20).—
Australia produced a mixed performance against China B in their opening World League match here today.Although the score line was 21-4 there were some average periods in
which Australia failed to produce the killer instinct that the great
teams do.
The 1st half saw quarters of 5-0 and 5-0, but during this period Australia went on two scoring bursts.
The 1st was towards the end of the 1st quarter when 4 goals were scored
in 3.30 then after a disappointing start to the 2nd quarter Australia
once again burst to life and scored another 4 goals in less than 1.50
to lead 10-0 at the break.
The start of the 3rd saw China capitalise on Australia’s mistakes and
laziness in defence before bouncing back to score the next 3 goals and
take the quarter 5-3.
The last quarter was the most consistent of the game and Australia kept the scoreboard ticking over with a 6-1 finish.
Coach McFadden said “Today was disappointing in that we lacked the
killer instinct we need to have to play for the medals in Beijing. We
scored some very nice goals but also missed the bread and butter ones
that we shouldn’t. Maybe the effect of the late arrival (3.00am) the
previous night didn’t help.
“I hope that the girls are ready for tomorrow’s game against China as they looked sharp in their 24 – 5 win over Japan.
