BACKGROUND:

Australian Water Polo Inc. is proud to announce the 2008 Volunteer & Player Awards.  The Australian Water Polo Volunteer & Player Awards aim to recognise the efforts of Australian water polo players, coaches, referees, clubs and administrators during the year 2007/08. 

A Volunteer & Player assessment panel will be established, representing members of Australian Water Polo, to determine the winners.

All winners of the 2008 Awards will be announced and presented with their Awards at a gala night to be held to coincide with the 2008 Annual Conference in Sydney 29/30 November 2008.

2008 AWPI VOLUNTEER & PLAYER AWARD CATEGORIES

GOLD AWARDS:
  • Male Player of the Year
  • Female Player of the Year
  • Club of the Year
  • Coach of the Year
  • Referee of the Year (Voted by Ref's Comm)
SILVER AWARDS:
  • Volunteer of the Year
  • Junior Male Player of the Year
  • Junior Female Player of the Year
  • Player of the Year (for a player with a disability)

THE AWARD PROCESS

Gold and Silver Awards: Nominations are sought from Australian Water Polo, affiliated associations, clubs and members. 

The Australian Water Polo Hall of Fame: Australian Water Polo will embark on inducting members into the Australian Water Polo Hall of Fame.  The Australian Water Polo Board will select the inductees from the nominees.  This year, members, clubs and associations will have the opportunity to nominate people for induction to the Hall of Fame. Award Period: Performances made only during the period of 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2008 inclusive will be considered for the 2008 Australian Water Polo Volunteer & Player Awards, with the exception of nominees for the Australian Water Polo Hall of Fame. 

Nominations: All affiliated State Associations, associations, clubs and members may submit nominations for the 2008 Australian Water Polo Volunteer, Club, & Player Awards. (Awards nomination form)

THE TIME SCHEDULE:

Award Nomination forms distributed to clubs & associations:
1 July 2008
Nominations for all Awards close (including supporting info):
30 September 2008
Details of nominations distributed to Voting Committee:
7 October 2008
Voting Committee decides winners:
End October 2008
Nominees notified of attendance at ceremony:
Early November 2008
Presentation of Awards:
29 November 20

If no nominations are forthcoming for a category, the Australian Water Polo Awards Committee may make a list of nominations.

THE JUDGING CRITERIA

Male Player of the Year – Judging Criteria
Female Player of the Year – Judging Criteria
Junior Male Player of the Year – Judging Criteria
Junior Female Player of the Year – Judging Criteria
Player of the Year (for a player with a disability) – Judging Criteria

Each nominee must be a permanent resident of Australia for a minimum of two years (including the full year of nomination).
Level of performance and participation at state, national and international tournaments & events.
Awards (honours, etc.) – other recognition.
Representation in national and international events.
Other relevant information.

Club of the Year – Judging Criteria

The club has a current strategic plan and operational plan (or is in the process of establishing one) that clearly states the club/centre goals and objectives for what the club hopes to achieve in the next 12 months and/or 3-5 years.
Developed links with their local schools.  Eg. Provides regular coaching, offers free or discounted use of club facilities, has adopted a school team, donates equipment, etc.
Planned club volunteer needs.  Has developed a functioning committee with roles delegated to a number of people as well as the development of a junior committee.  Has encouraged volunteers to attend development workshops.
Provides opportunities for club volunteers to be recognised for their contribution eg. Volunteer of the month, association, state or national annual awards.
Provides opportunities for current members and to attract new members eg. Open Days, Come ‘n’ Try Days, time friendly formats, etc. 
Has participated in at least one National or State initiative such as Come ‘n’ Try Day’s, or has become (or is in the process of becoming) a member of the Club Development Network (formerly Active Australia).
Offers a wide range of competition and social opportunities for members eg. Juniors, seniors, midweek, night competition, new competition formats.
Ensures that water polo club/centre facilities are safe for participation, are regularly inspected and have ongoing maintenance.

Volunteer of the Year – Judging Criteria

Must be a member of a water polo club or association that is affiliated with Australian Water Polo.
Has assisted their water polo club or association to grow and develop within the community.
Finds satisfaction in being involved and performing a job well.
Feels a sense of achievement from their involvement.
Demonstrates responsibility, initiative, personal commitment to water polo, enthusiasm when involved in club volunteer work and has effective organisational skills.
Works well as part of the overall volunteer water polo team at the club.
Is respected by the water polo club members for the amount of work they put in towards the organisation of the club.

Coach of the Year – Judging Criteria

The coach is accredited with NOAC through a range of coach education programs organised by Australian Water Polo or a supported organisation of Australian Water Polo.
Level of performance and participation at state, national and international tournaments & events.
Awards (honours, etc.) – other recognition.
Representation in national and international events.
The coach has a range of players in coaching programs throughout the week and has introduced a number of new players to the game of water polo in the past 12 months from his/her coaching programs.The coach has encouraged a number of his/her students to become a member of an affiliated club of Australian Water Polo as well as encourage their students to participate in a range of competitions (tournaments, roster, etc.) to improve their development.
The coach has recognised players’ from his/her coaching program and recommended them to join development and State squads in the past 12 months.
The coach is a regular contributor and attendant at meetings, as well as volunteering their time when required.
The coach has been involved or is willing to participate in coach education seminars and programs to help educate the new generation of people that would like to become water polo coaches.
The coach has or is willing to volunteer his time in the development of the game through a range of programs organised by Australian Water Polo (eg. Offering coaching to people with a disability, coaching or organising programs at club fun and open days, management of junior teams at state or national competitions, etc.).

Referee of the Year – Judging Criteria

The Australian Water Polo Referee of the Year is determined by the Australian Water Polo Referees Commission.
The referee is accredited with AWPRC through a range of referee education programs organised by Australian Water Polo or a supported organisation of Australian Water Polo.
The referee has introduced a number of new referees to the game of water polo in the past 12 months.
The referee is a regular contributor and attendant at meetings, as well as volunteering their time when required.
The referee has been involved or is willing to participate in referee education seminars and programs to help educate the new generation of people that would like to become water polo referees.
The referee has or is willing to volunteer his time in the development of the game through a range of programs organised by Australian Water Polo.
Level of performance and participation at state, national and international tournaments & events.
Awards (honours, etc.) – other recognition.
Representation in national and international events.
