Proud father Gene Beadsworth, who took the following photos, provides this report.
Wednesday
morning the three of us went to the AIS, Gemma for a physiotherapist
appointment, Julie and I wandered around checking out the AIS the
aquatics area in particular as neither of us had seen the AIS before so
it was interesting to see where Gemma spent considerable time.
After lunch in Canberra City Gemma attended a Relay Briefing in
the afternoon whilst Julie and I did a tour of the major tourist
highlights of Canberra before returning to our hotel to prepare for the
Relay Official Reception in the evening in the Great Hall of the new
Parliament House put on by the ACT Chinese Embassy.
At the reception we meet Ray Smee and his wife Isabella; Ray
Captained the Australian Men's Water Polo Team at the 1956 Melbourne
Olympic Games and was Vice - Captain at the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games
and was Torchbearer No 54, Gemma was Torchbearer No 55 out of a total
of 80 from all over Australia.
Gemma also met among many others at the reception Lee Kernaghan
2008 Australian of the Year and country music legend and Tania Major
2007 Young Australian of the Year for her work with indigenous
communities, 'pic' No 17 attached of the three of them; 'Pic' No 23

of the relay before alighting the Torchbearers' Coach, 'Pic' No 57 Ray
Smee & Gemma in front of the Torchbear's Coach at their drop off
point at the conclusion of the relay.
The relay concluded late morning, there was then an Official
Lunch for Torchbearer's and then in the afternoon a large concert at
the finish of the relay for all to attend.
A wonderful time for two days was had by all, to experience the Olympic
Spirit and Goodwill involved between those involved in the Torch Relay
and those supporting the Torchbearers as they completed their legs of
the relay was something unique and special and an experience of a
lifetime; the total organisation, planning and security for the two
days was excellent.
