DAY 7

Three NSW teams played for gold. The NSW Blues boys trampled Victoria Blue 14-6 while the NSW Blues girls swept aside NSW Waratahs 12-2.
WA Gold boys collected the bronze medal with a 9-7 margin over Queensland Maroon and Queensland Maroon won the girls’ bronze, beating WA Black 10-4.
Blake Edwards starred for Victoria Blue and collected the player of the series and the highest goal-scoring awards. He nailed an incredible 37 goals during the week.
Queensland Maroon’s Sam Hicks was named goalkeeper of the series.
NSW Waratahs’ Emily Carr won the girls’ player of the series while Ashleigh Southern (QLD Maroon) was leading scorer with 28 goals.
NSW Blues’ Serena Reid was best in goals.

DAY 6

Perth (October 5).— New South Wales boys and girls will play in the gold-medal finals at the national 16 years and under water polo championships at Challenge Stadium today.
Both first teams won their semifinals today with the NSW Blues boys winning a gripping match against Queensland Maroon 7-6 and the NSW Blues girls defeating WA Black 14-6.
Victoria Blue held off WA Gold 7-6 to reach the boys’ final while in the girls’ pool, NSW Waratahs beat Queensland Maroon 7-6 to set up a NSW-NSW final.
NSW Blues struggled on counter against the Maroons and spent a lot of energy smashing the goalposts in the first half, coming from 3-1 down early in the second quarter to lead 5-3 at halftime and 6-4 at the final break.
The Maroons came within a goal inside the last three minutes but the Blues held out with a solid defence, especially when a man down.
Victoria was never headed against WA Gold but the host team levelled the game at 4-4, 5-5 and 6-6 with Victoria claiming the winner at 3:15 in the final quarter.
NSW Blues girls, with nine players scoring, rushed to 7-2 at halftime against WA Black and went seven clear at 11-4 heading into the last period.
The NSW Waratahs girls scored their winner against Queensland with a penalty goal in the final minute.

DAY 5
NSW claim top qualifying spots at 16s' Nationals
Perth (October 3).— Like good cream New South Wales has risen to the top with both the boys’ and girls’ teams ranked No 1 heading into the finals at the national 16 years and under water polo championships at Challenge Stadium today.
New South Wales Blues finished with 28 points, a point clear of Western Australia Gold. The Blues and WA Gold will have to wait for round-11 results to find their semifinal opponents tomorrow afternoon.
Queensland Maroon and Victoria Blue are expected to make the semifinals.
In the girls’ competition the NSW Blues finished the preliminary rounds two points clear of Queensland Maroon with Japan two points further back.
Japan will not contest the finals so fourth-placed NSW Waratahs and WA Black will contest the medal rounds.
NSW Blues take on WA Black and their preliminary round ended with the Blues 9-3 winners. Queensland Maroon will clash with the Waratahs, who won 5-4 in their round match.
The medal finals are on Sunday.

Top teams jockeying for semifinal berths at 16s' nationals
Perth (October 2)—

The top teams are jockeying for positions at the national 16 years and under national water polo championships at Challenge Stadium. Victoria Blues hold top spot after seven rounds of the 11-team competition but WA Gold and New South Wales Blues are close behind as they close in on Saturday¹s semifinals.
Victoria Blue beat WA Black 10-2 and South Australia 9-3 while NSW Blues made their assault by beating WA Gold 6-3 but are still three points adrift in third place behind the host team.
In the girls' competition, NSW Blues are in first place on goal differential over Queensland Maroon with Japan third and NSW Waratahs and WA Black in the four-five positions.
The latter two will be hoping to keep Victoria at bay and qualify for the semifinals as Japan will not compete in the medal rounds.

DAY 3
Western Australia Gold boys are unbeaten after five rounds of the national 16 years and under national water polo championships at Challenge Stadium here today.
However, the tough games are ahead for the top WA team in a competition where the next three teams — New South Wales Blue, Victoria Blue and Queensland Maroon are beating each other.
The Queenslanders downed the top NSW team 8-7 after leading for much of the game while Victoria Blue drew with eighth-ranked NSW Waratahs but have a game in hand on WA and NSW.
The spirited play continued in the girls’ section with competition leader Queensland Maroon pushed to 11-8 by fifth-ranked Victoria and the NSW Waratahs edging Queensland White 5-4 in a middle-table encounter.
The Maroons and NSW Blues are unbeaten with the Blues having big wins over ACT (17-2) and Queensland White (11-1).
Japan holds third ranking, having beaten WA Black 8-4 and ACT 17-2.

DAY 2
Japan led the Blues 6-5 with just over two minutes remaining but gave up a penalty goal and two action goals to lose 8-6 in an exciting finale to an excellent match which saw Japan 4-2 ahead at halftime but the game level at 5-5 by the final break.
Japan slipped to fourth on the ladder after three rounds with the Blues trailing Queensland Maroon, which is also unbeaten.
The lead Queensland outfit beat Victoria 12-6 and has yet to be tested.
In boys’ play, New South Wales Blues head the ladder with three straight wins, a point clear of Victoria Blue, which has two wins and a 5-5 draw with the NSW Waratahs.

DAY 1
Japan makes a statement on day one of 16s' Nationals
Perth (September 29).—

Japan made a huge impact on day one of the national 16 years and under national water polo championships at Challenge Stadium here today. Contesting the girls’ division on an invitational basis, the Japanese team defeated South Australia 14-3 with Koharu Honda top-scoring with five goals.
It is the first time an international team has contested the tournament, which contains 10 girls’ and 10 boys’ teams and runs trough until Sunday.

The draw for the 16 & Under National Championships is released today. Eleven boys and ten girls teams will play prelimimnary rounds over five days follwed by two days of playoffs and finals.

TEAMS
Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia are invited to nominate two (2) teams per gender, the composition of which shall be determined by in line with guidelines issued by AWPI, other State Associations may enter more than one team subject to approval of AWPI.
Further, AWPI has extended an invitation to Japan Water Polo to enter a Girls Team (B'91) which will compete in the Preliminary Round and Classification Round but will not be eligible to play off for positions 1 - 4.
Teams will be limited to fifteen (15) players per team.
Please note that the names of players (along with their date of birth) in cap number order are required to be submitted to AWPI by 15 September 2008.

CLOSING DATE FOR ENTRIES
Entries are now open and will close with AWPI on or before Monday 18 August 2008.
Your entry must be accompanied by the entry fee and is to be submitted on the competition entry form/tax invoice. Payment to be made to AWPI.
The Entry Fee is $600.00 per team (includes GST) payable to AWPI to accompany each team entry.
Entry fee for teams entering after the closing date of 18 August 2008 is $1200.

PLAYER & TEAM ELIGIBILITY
Please note that all players must be registered with their State Association and comply with the Date of Birth criterion.

REFEREES
The name of the referee accompanying the team must be notified at the time of lodgment of the initial Entry Form. Entry Forms that do not nominate a referee will not be accepted.
There will be centralised accommodation arrangements made for referees, and charged to State Associations at the rate of $80 per night per team. This cost will include ground transport for referees. The nominated referee must be independent of the role of coach and/or manager of a team entered in either gender.

PROGRAM
Games will commence at 8.00 am on the morning of Monday 29 September 2008.
The program and format of the championship will depend upon the number of teams entering.
Every endeavour will be made to maximise the number of games each team will play.
The format will be advised shortly after entries close.

PRE-EVENT MEETINGS
Meetings for the Coaches and Managers, and Referees will be held prior to the start of the event at 7.00pm on Sunday 28 September 2008 at Sports House (next to Challenge Stadium).
Your cooperation is sought in having a representative at these meetings.

TEAM TRAVEL
As a guide, teams should arrive in Perth on Sunday 28 September in time to have a representative at the 7.00 pm Coaches/Managers Meeting (games start 8.00 am on 29 September) and plan to depart on flights around 6.00 pm on the 5 October.
Teams may make their own travel arrangements. AWPI can provide a competitive quote for air travel should teams wish to enquire. Please contact Julia Annells on 03 6216 8999 and Julia will obtain a quote.

PRESENTATIONS
Opening and Closing Ceremonies will be conducted during the Championships and all teams are required to attend in full uniform.

COMPETITION RULES
Rules under which the Championships are to be conducted will be advised following the close of entries, as the Rules will be dependent upon the event format.

CODE OF CONDUCT
The Championships will be conducted under the Constitution and By-Laws of Australian Water Polo Inc.
Your attention is drawn to the Codes of Conduct contained in Section 7 of the By-Laws for Players, Referees, Officials, Spectators and others.

CHILD PROTECTION LEGISLATION
In accordance with the Australian Water Polo Inc Member Protection Policy which is binding on ALL members of AWPI, the following commitments must be met by Managers, Coaches and Referees who have contact with children under the age of eighteen years.
Managers, Coaches and Referees visiting Western Australia must comply with State Legislative requirements.

DRUG POLICY
Australian Water Polo Incorporated supports the Australian Government, the Australian Sports Commission, the Australian Olympic Committee, and the Australian Sports Drug Agency in their efforts to eradicate the use of drugs in sport. AWPI has published an anti-doping policy, which will be adhered to for this event.
Therapeutic Use Exemptions
Please note that athletes may be subject to drug testing and they must ensure that appropriate forms are completed if they are taking medication.

MEDIA STATEMENTS
States, Clubs and teams shall be permitted to promote the event and or their team within their own state (subject to AWPI approval). However, no competitor, team manager, official or spokesperson for a state or team shall make media statements that could bring the 2008 National Championships Boys and Girls 16 Years and Under, its sponsor, or officials into controversy. Such statements shall be deemed to be a breach of AWPI discipline and may be dealt with accordingly.

THEFT
Any person/s found stealing signage or any equipment owned by Australian Water Polo Inc or Western Australian Water Polo Inc or the Aquatic Centres or other venues may be immediately reported to police and that person/s will be brought before the AWPI Judiciary. Please note that automatic disqualification of the team from the championship will occur if any member is found guilty of theft.

SPONSORSHIP
Teams may pursue their own sponsorship for the Championships, however, in the event of teams having conflict with event sponsors or AWPI sponsors, the latter will have precedence.

INJURY STATISTICS
Australian Water Polo Inc is vitally interested in collecting injury statistics and, hence, forms will be provided at the briefing meeting to allow feedback of this information to AWPI.
Please be aware that these form require no private information on the player or access to their medical records.
