Aussie teams in the medals at World Masters Print E-mail
Perth (April 26).— Aussie teams came away with a host of medals in the FINA Masters World Championships water polo competition which finished in Perth yesterday.

Full results have yet to be posted but the women's competition was dominated by Australian teams on the podium while the 65+ men's crown went to Melville Mackerals from Perth.

In a Perth final in the 30+ division, City Beach women beat Triton 7-6 with Brazil third.

Perth's Dolphins collected gold in the 35+ age group.

Dolphins Dej Vu collected another medal when it needed extra time to beat the star-studded Queensland Blues 7-6 after being lcoked at 5-all after four periods in the 40+ age group The bronze went to Perth's UWA Composite team.

UWA and Dolphins' Pink Pointers won gold and silver in the 45+ division

The women's 50+ gold went to a team combining USA and Australian players, named US/A/US. 

The world champion Brisbane Barracudas fell short in the 50+ men's final while the Melville Sharks won silver in the men's 55+.

There was some spectacular play in the younger age groups with Perth's Andrei Kovalenko linking up with three of his fellow Barcelona Olympic bronze-medal CIS team in winning the 35+ age group in a furious encounter with the USA Olympic Club.

Aussies finding it tough at World Masters
Perth (April 22).—

Australian teams are finding it tough against strong international competition at the XII FINA Masters World Championships in Perth.

With just three days of competition remaining the large number of Australian teams are finding the competition a challenge.

The women's teams are faring the best, especialy the star-studded Queensland Blues, and are expected to collect plenty of medals while in the men's competition, the world champion Brisbane Barracudas are expected to fare well in the finals.

Much interest has been centred on the Olympic Club from the USA, the Russian and Serbian teams, as well as Kazakhstan. 

The final matches are on Thursday with the event finishing with open water swimming on Friday.

FINA Masters start in Perth
Perth (April 18).—

From the Dreamtime and the deep throb of the didgeridoo came more than 2000 people to celebrate the Opening Ceremony of the XII FINA Masters Championships at Challenge Stadium in Perth, Australia.

With nearly 5000 competitors from 80 National Federations, the Championships kicked off with a huge party in Challenge’s main hall.

With the traditional owners of the land giving the welcoming dance, the championships were underway with Western Australian Premier Alan Carpenter making the keynote speech.

FINA President Mustapha Larfaoui earlier greeted the athletes and their supporters to the championships, wishing them well for the coming week and success in the water.

The other speech was made by organising committee chairman Sean Walsh. Included in the VIP arena was 1972 Olympic Games star Shane Gould, from Australia.

Water polo started the tournament while swimming’s 800m freestyle events were conducted on the first day. Synchronised swimming and diving start tomorrow with the open water events on Anzac Day, Australia’s official war remembrance day, on April 25.

FINA Masters World Champs start in Perth tomorrow
Perth (April 16).—
The FINA World Masters Championships start in Perth tomorrow with nearly 5000 participants. Water polo starts on Friday with 70 teams competing including two divisions of women's and seven of men's.

The biggest divisions are the 45-49 men where 15 teams are competing and 11 in the 50-54 age group.

There are four teams in the women's 30+, including a team from Brazil, and six in the 40+ age group.

Matches are being staged in various pools of the vast Challenge Stadium complex with Claremot, UWA and Bicton also being utilised.

The event starts with FINA Dinner this evening and closes on Anzac Day, April 25.
