Sydney (April 13). – Brother and sister Olympians Gavin and Taryn Woods
have won Australia’s top water polo award for the second consecutive
year.
The Balmain Tigers pair received their respective Most Valuable Player awards for the National Water Polo League season at the awards dinner last night. Gavin has been a mainstay in the Aussie Sharks team for several years now while Taryn retired from international water polo after winning the gold medal at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Gavin won the Charles Turner Medal and Taryn the Debbie Watson Medal. Taryn’s club team mate Rebecca Rippon and Stephen Cody of men’s champions Wests Magpies won the Finals Series MVP awards. Awards: Men: NWPL Champions Trophy (Premiers): Wests Magpies. Southern Cross Trophy (Minor premiers): Fremantle Mariners. Charles Turner Medal (Season MVP): Gavin Woods (Balmain Tigers). Tom Hoad Medal (Finals MVP): Stephen Cody (Wests Magpies). Highest goal-scorer: Ross Sinclair (Hunter Hurricanes). All star team: Daniel Lees (Cronulla Sharks), Stephen Cody (Wests Magpies), Trent Franklin (Sydney University Lions), Rhys Howden (Brisbane Barracudas), Anthony Martin (KFC Queensland Breakers), Ross Sinclair (Hunter Hurricanes), Gavin Woods (Balmain Tigers).
