Sydney (April 12). - Wests Magpies and Fremantle Marlins have won the men's and women's National Water Polo League titles respectively after the last day of finals series action.
Wests claimed the title after defeating Victorian Tigers 7-5 in a close contest in the grand final. Troy Delany was the hero for the Magpies with four goals including two in the last quarter to seal victory for his side.
In the women's grand final Fremantle staged an amazing comeback to beat Balmain TIgers 11-9.
The Marlins trailed 1-4 at quarter time but fought their way back to send the game to extra, time where they ran away with the game and the title.
Brisbane Barracudas beat Cronulla Sharks 10-6 in the women's playoff for third place while KFC Queensland Breakers beat Balmain Tigers 13-7 in the men's playoff.

Fremantle Marlins are the champions of the women's National Water Polo League for the fourth time in the league's five year history after coming from behind to beat Balmain Tigers in the grand final 11-9 after extra time.
Fremantle was behind 1-4 at quarter time but fought hard and tied the scores late in the fourth quarter.
In extra time Zoe Arancini put the Marlins in front for the first time in the game in the first period of extra time before two goals to Kelly Heuchan secured the result in the second period.
Taryn Woods continued her outstanding finals series with four goals for the Tigers while Bronwyn Smith contributed two.
Heuchan led the way for the Marlins with four goals while Katie Finucane picked up three before receiving her third major foul in the final period of regulation time.

KFC Queensland Breakers won the men's bronze medal after beating Balmain Tigers 13-7.
Queensland dominated the first and fourth quarters, winning them 4-1 and 6-1 respectively. Even though Balmain were solid in the other two quarters the hurdle proved far too high to overcome.
Gavin Woods was the best for Balmain, who struggled after Chris Dyson and Cade Wright both received their third major fouls before the end of the third quarter.
Six players scored two goals for the 2007 champions Breakers including player/coach Daniel Marsden, who was inspirational with his quality play.

In the women’s decider Fremantle will be attempting to win the league for the fourth time while Balmain will be aiming for their first triumph. Fremantle beat Cronulla Sharks 8-7 in their semifinal while Balmain progressed thanks to a 13-12 victory over Brisbane Barracudas.
Wests and Victoria will both be attempting to win their first National League crown when they meet in the men’s final. Wests won a thrilling semifinal over Balmain 6-3 while Victoria won 12-10 over KFC Queensland Breakers.
In the women’s bronze medal match Cronulla will play Brisbane and Queensland will meet Balmain in the men’s battle for third.
In the women’s playoff for fifth position Sydney University Lions beat Victorian Tigers 15-8 while in the men’s playoff Drummoyne Devils beat Fremantle Mariners 12-9 after extra time.

The first half was an incredibly tight affair, with only three goals being scored as Wests went into the break with a 2-1 lead. However Wests blew the game open in the third quarter that they won 3-0 and then held onto their lead in the final quarter.
Daniel Swinnerton and Troy Delany scored two goals each for Wests while Joel Dennerley was outstanding in goals.

The Tigers appeared to have the game all wrapped up as they held a comfortable lead late in the final quarter, but a spirited fightback from the Barracudas saw them have a chance to send the game to extra time.

National Water Polo League finals series have been decided after a
fascinating day of action.
In the men’s competition Balmain Tigers will face rivals Wests Magpies in one of the semifinals while KFC Queensland Breakers will face Victorian Tigers in the other match.
Meanwhile in women’s action Cronulla Sharks will face Fremantle Marlins and Balmain Tigers will face Brisbane Barracudas in the other single match to decide who plays in the gold medal game.
Surprisingly both the men’s and women’s minor premiers, the Fremantle Mariners and Sydney University Lions respectively, missed out on semifinal spots and both will playoff for fifth place tomorrow.

Olympian Kelly Heuchan provided one of the best individual performances seen at the finals series so far with nine goals to help get Fremantle over the line.
Sydney University were all over the Marlins in the first quarter as they won it 5-1 but the three time champions regrouped and came out firing in the next two quarters.
The Lions will now play off for fifth and sixth place tomorrow, a result nobody expected from the minor premiers.

Balmain finished tied on points with Fremantle Marlins in women's group B and needed to score more than ten goals to overtake Fremantle on the goals scored tiebreaker.
Aussie Stinger Rebecca Rippon was the star for Balmain with four goals while for Victoria Lauren Baldwin scored three.

with a host of thrilling match-ups at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic
Centre today.
Cronulla Sharks women were the first team to book their spot in the semifinals after beating Brisbane Barracudas and Sydney University Lions 9-3 and 15-10 respectively. The other women’s group is evenly poised with Fremantle Marlins remaining a chance to receive the bye through to the semifinals, with the Marlins beating Victoria 10-9 and drawing with Balmain Tigers 9-9 today.
It was a mixed day for KFC Queensland Breakers in men’s action. Queensland could only manage a 9-9 draw with underdogs Drummoyne Devils but then beat minor premiers Fremantle Mariners 9-6 to give them a good chance of winning the group.
In group B in the men’s competition Balmain Tigers sit in the box seat after beating Wests Magpies 4-2. Wests then did them a big favour by beating Victorian Tigers 11-10, meaning that if Balmain wins tomorrow they will win the group.

KFC Queensland Breakers revived their hopes of winning group A with a suprise 9-6 victory over minor premiers Fremantle Mariners.
Queensland signalled their intentions early as they won the first quarter 4-2. For the rest of the game the Breakers were able to resist the fight of Fremantle, holding on for a narrow victory which somewhat makes ammends for their heart-breaking draw earlier in the day.
Queensland got their goals from an unlikely source in Mitch McCann, who scored three for the victors. Aussie Shark Daniel Lawrence scored two for Fremantle, who play Drummoyne tomorrow.

Cronulla Sharks have progressed directly through to the semifinals of the women’s competition after beating Sydney University Lions 15-10.
Cronulla recorded a comfortable 9-3 victory over Brisbane earlier in the day to put them into the box seat and they did what they needed to against minor premiers Sydney University.
The two sides were even during the first quarter but then Cronulla dominated the second period, winning it 6-2, thanks in large part to three goals from Mia Santoromito.
Nicole Zagame and Santoromito were the stars for the Sharks with four goals each, while for Sydney University Alicia Brightwell and Taniele Gofers contributed three each.
Cronulla will now have to wait 24 hours to find out who their semifinal opponents will be while the Lions will be trying to improve their position entering the quarterfinals when they play Brisbane tomorrow.

Wests trailed 4-5 at half-time but dominated the third quarter, winning it 5-2 thanks to two goals each to Troy Delany and Daniel Swinnerton during that period.
Victoria moved within one goal with 1:47 remaining in the match and had a brilliant chance to tie the game with just seconds left when Aussie Shark Tim Neesham got into open water, only for the ball to be stolen off him at the last second.
Delany led the way for the victors with four goals while Stephen Cody added three. Tom Curwen was Victoria's best with four.
Wests finishes the round robin section with one win from their two games while Victoria will have to beat Balmain tomorrow to avoid finishing on bottom of their group.

Lizi Simms scored two of her three goals in the final quarter for Balmain while for Fremantle Australian international centre forward Gemma Beadsworth was dominant, scoring four goals, with three of them coming in the final period.

Drummoyne Devils snatched a surprise 9-9 draw with KFC Queensland Breakers from the jaws of defeat after a Tyler Martin goal as time ran out.
Queensland appeared to have the game wrapped up when they led 9-8 with just seconds remaining, however Martin successfully tried his luck from long range after Daniel Marsden was ejected, with the horn going as the ball travelled past helpless goalkeeper Rafael Sterk.
The Breakers appeared to have the game under control when they led 5-2 during the second quarter but the Devils clawed their way back at that advantage as they won the third quarter 4-2.
Veteran Sean Boyd led Drummoyne with four goals, including three in the third quarter while Aussie Shark Anthony Martin was one of three Queensland players to score two.

Balmain entered the match as the underdogs but they were full of confidence and put a complete stop to Wests' attack.
The Tigers proved victorious in the hard-fought game even though they had only one extra-man opportunity, coming in the fourth quarter. Wests had two chances and were awarded a penalty that they failed to convert.
Remarkably neither side scored during the final quarter despite Wests going all out in attack in an attempt to get back into the game.
The Tigers will progress straight through to the semi-finals if they can cause another upset and beat Victorian Tigers tomorrow, while Wests now face an uphill battle to progress through to that stage.

Katie Finucane scored four for the Marlins, who dominated early but saw their lead gradually slip away throughout the match.
Victoria won the final quarter 4-1, moving within one goal of Fremantle
with 1:05 remaining. However they let their late opportunity to win
slip and Fremantle held on for a thrilling victory.
Gemma Beadsworth helped Fremantle's cause with two goals while Jade Hanson, Rowie Webster and Elise Rosato each scored twice for the Tigers.
Mariners and Lions head NWPL contenders
Sydney (April 8).— Perth’s Fremantle Mariners and Sydney University
Lions women are the respective favourites for the National Water Polo
League finals here this week.
Both won the Southern Cross trophies for the minor premierships in a
tight, action-packed season, which has been condensed because of the
Olympic Games.
The top six teams in each competition will battle for places in the
grand finals at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre (SOPAC) on Saturday.
Matches start on Wednesday at both SOPAC and Ryde Aquatic Centre with the full draw available on www.australianwaterpolo.com.au.
