bronwen_knox.jpgBrisbane (February 7).— An interview with Aussie Stinger Bronwen Knox.

What club do you currently play for?
QLD KFC Breakers

How old were you when you started playing water polo and which club did you fist play for?
I was 14 years old when a friend from school asked me to make up numbers so they would have enough players to field a team. I had never even seen a game until the first Saturday of competition. I first played for North Brisbane Polo Bears.

What’s your highlight to date in water polo?
I would have to say winning the Gold Medal in the 2006 Water Polo World Cup.

How many years have you been playing top level water polo for?
My first tour with the senior national team was in 2005 competing in the World league (USA) and then at the FINA World Championships (Montreal). So 2008 will be my 4th year.

What are your interests outside of the pool?
My grandfather recently introduced me to the stock market, and investing in shares, so at present one of my interests is learning more about the market and hopefully investing wisely (fingers crossed!)

What do you do in your down time?
I love to read, catch up with friends and family, hitting the beach and enjoying the time spent out of the chlorine.

Have you ever considered playing water polo professionally in Europe?
I have considered it. I have played for a college in the USA for about 18 months (2005/06), which I really enjoyed. However, there has never really been a good time and at present I am currently working towards completing my degree at university.

Explain the feeling of playing for the AUSSIE STINGERS.
It’s hard to put into words. There is nothing greater than representing your country. With the type of reputation that the Aussie Stingers have developed from the 2000 Olympics and before, playing under that banner is surreal. It’s a real honour to be selected in the squad, especially when you look at the calibre of players who have been selected in the past and the players who you get to train and compete with.

You Play one of the most demanding positions in Water Polo “centre forward” Explain the rigors of playing such a position.
I have always been a centre back, competing with the centre forward for position and the ball. But since 2006 I was thrust into the position of centre forward as well, due to injuries on the World League tour. This was a real eye opener, of not only the amount of work and struggle the centre forwards comes up against, but also the skill required to maintain your position in the water, while wrestling. Then after what feels like more the 30 seconds trying to get a decent shot off. Only to repeat this process many times over.

What would your words of inspiration be to up and coming juniors here in Aus?
That it’s important to never give up, but it’s even more important to never give in.

Who would you rate as the,” best player you have ever played against/with?”
I think that the current squad is very fortunate to have some of the best players in the world in their positions. And it’s an honour to train with them.

How long do you see yourself playing water polo for?
I have no idea. At present I am focused on making my way to Beijing and fulfilling the dream of winning gold. After that ……. who knows.

Who was your inspiration to achieving so much in Water polo so far?
There have been so many people who have encouraged, supported and inspired my water polo career. But my family (my mother especially) have always been there for me, both through triumph and disappointments.

Olympics are not too far away, what’s your preparation schedule like leading up to the games?
Very busy. The next few months will be spent both aboard and at home where the national league competition is about to start.
