Wyong (January 26).— During this Australia Day long weekend the Wyong Water Polo Club from the Central Coast of NSW will be partaking in the NSWWPI Country Club Tournament being held in Newcastle.
The team list includes a father and four of his sons, which coincidentally all have the surname Donohue. There is Ryan, Keiran, Jason, Justin and myself and our respective ages are 24, 23, 15,14 & 50. It was suggested at training during the week that I bring this to your attention as it is most definitely a Wyong Water Polo club record and after being involved in the Central Coast Competition for the past 28 years after moving up from Sydney, I can confirm it is also a record for our district. It could quite possibly be a State record — Metro or Country — maybe even an Australian Water Polo record for the most family team members in a recognised tournament. I promote our game wherever I go and have made many friends and acquaintances over the 38 years due to opportunities opened up to me through my involvement in Water Polo and I intend to hang in there for a few years yet. There is a mixture of club and representative honours among our family and the game has been such an enjoyable part of our lives for such a long time I feel very proud to pass this info onto you. I also have a daughter, Nicole, who played in the National League Competition as a part of the UNSW women's team for two years prior to moving down to Victoria recently. My wife has never played and calls herself a Water Polo widow but she is very supportive of our passion for the game and very proud of our individual achievements, she does try to get us to talk about other subjects sometimes, just for a change, but being out numbered 6 to 1 most conversations generally revert back to Water Polo in some shape or form in no time at all. Anyway, thanks for your time and if there have been any other Water Polo family records achieved similar to ours over the years and you can establish the details I would love to hear back from you. Yours in Water Polo A very proud, Peter Donohue |
