Sydney (January 24).— It was announced yesterday that former club champion, Tim Hamill, will be Balmain Men’s Head Coach for the 2008 season, taking over from player / coach Gavin Woods. Gavin had acted as caretaker coach since Ray Mayers moved to Queensland at the end of last season.
Club Delegate Nicholas Falzon commented:
“The club has always worked hard to ensure the men’s and women’s teams
have had coaches of the highest order to create a strong team and help
the individual players develop and improve. With that in mind, everyone
at the club is very pleased Tim has come on board. Gavin has done a
terrific job preparing the team and guiding them through the Sydney
Metropolitan competition but this appointment will allow him to focus
on his performance in the pool.”
Tim was a playing member of the club for 16 years, before retiring at
the end of the 2006 season, and his family has been directly involved
with the club for some 45 years. In his playing career he represented
Australia from 2002 to 2005 including at the World Championships in
Montreal, participated at Universiade in Beijing, was the National
League’s Most Valuable Player in 2004, was Balmain’s club captain in
2003, 2004 and 2005, and holds the club record for most National League
appearances. As a coach Tim has had success in charge of school and
junior sides. He has a Bachelor of Physical Education from the
Australian College of Physical Education, Sydney.
“With so many young players in the side we have to be realistic with
our goals, particularly in the first half of the season, but I am very
excited by the challenge and honoured to accept the position.” Tim said
earlier today.
