Brisbane (January 11).— The Australian 20 and under championships start in Adelaide next week and for one Queensland brother-and-sister combination it will be a big step forward.

Their names are Trevor and Ashleigh Southern and they come from a small town called Cardwell which is located around 1600km north of Brisbane and has a population of about 1000 people.

The nearest water polo competition is in Townsville which is a 350km round trip for the pair which their mother does for them.  The competition in Townsville is actually on a Tuesday night so they do not play in this, rather they travel down on a Saturday and play in and train in the junior competition — U14 age group.

In spite of all of this, both players were selected in the Australian Youth Squads following the 16yrs and Under National championships in Sydney late last year and in Adelaide Trevor will line up for South Australia and Ashleigh will be a member of the Aussie Crocodiles national youth squad which will be competing.

Both were talent identified from a flippa ball carnival that Cardwell Primary school competed in and began their water polo careers at the respective ages of 11 and 10.

Through the past six years, they have attended numerous training camps covering literally thousands of kilometres each year to pursue their sport.  Both have represented Queensland from the 14yrs age group with Ashleigh having been a state representative since the age of 12.

There is also further bad news as the youngest of the clan has just returned from the U14 state championships where he was named in the state squad despite being only 10 years of age.  The only difference with Andrew, the youngest one is that he is a left hander.
