Canberra (January 10).— Australia will play a four-nation men’s water polo tournament in Hungary next month as part of its Olympic campaign.
Aussie Sharks head coach John Fox is utilising the break in the
European leagues to gather his stars for a training camp with Greece
and Romania as well as the Hungarian tournament.
“I want to gauge where the European-based guys are at. I think we made
some good steps in Perth (against Serbia before Christmas) by getting
guys to play different styles of defence and attack and I want the
European members to be adaptable as well.
“From a coaching point of view I want to draw a line with the
Europeans. They will be peaking and I want to see where we are at and
what we might need to focus on before going back to Europe before the
Olympics.”
The Sharks will play Olympics pre-qualified Hungary and Beijing
hopefuls Canada and Germany ahead of the Olympic Games Qualification
Tournament in Oradea, Romania on March 2-9.
The short tour starts with training against Greece, also non-qualified
for Beijing, from February 16 and finishes with a training camp with
Romania in Oradea prior to the OGQT.
The team contains Italian-based stars Thomas Whalan and Pietro
Figlioli, Croatian-based centre forward Ryan Moody and Spanish-based
