Brisbane (January 7).— An interview with Mel Rippon, current Aussie Stingers captain and widely regarded as one of the best players in the game.
What club do you currently play for?
Brisbane Barracudas
How old were you when you started playing water polo and which club did you first play for?
I played my first ever game when I was about 11. I was filling in for
Bec’s school team who needed an extra player. I really didn’t want to
and vowed I would never play again… I played again about a year later
and realised I enjoyed it, that was with the St George Dragons.
What’s your highlight to date in water polo?
I have quite a few that I can’t separate. Winning World Juniors in 1999 was huge for me and is a high ight for
sure; It was the first time Australia had won the tournament. Also competing in Athens in 2004 was an amazing experience and our result there is much of the driving force behind me now. But I must say winning the World Cup in 2006 is the best, after all we
did win! But it also was the time that we started to realise our
potential and so did many of the other teams.
How many years have you been playing top level water polo for?
I was in the squad for quite some time… But I finally made the 13
for the Commonwealth Championships in 2002 so I guess we are looking at
6 years
What are your interests outside of the pool?
You mean there is life outside of the pool???
What do you do in your down time?
Recover from training! I love reading and listening to music and pretty much anything that
relates to eating. You know Breakfasts, Lunches, Dinners, Desserts,
that kind of thing
Have you ever considered playing water polo professionally in Europe?
I played half of a season in 2002 for Orrizonte, a club team in
Italy. We won the National championship and the Champions Trophy.
Explain the feeling of captaining your country at international level!
I don’t think it is something that I could do justice with words, But I will try. I am extremely proud to be representing my country and the honour of leading the team is something I value.
You have been named in many an article worldwide as one of the ‘best
female players’ in the current women’s game. How does this make you
feel?
It’s an honour to have someone think that about you but that’s not
the reason I play. The team is what drives me and I want to be on the
best team, not a good player in a team that doesn’t win.
What would your words of inspiration be to up and coming juniors here in Aus?
People talk about the sacrifices we make but in the end it’s a choice, so make it a choice you are glad you made.
It’s not always easy but it’s easier when you are having fun!
Who would you rate as the,” best player you have ever played
against/with?”
I have been fortunate enough to have trained with or
under many of the best players Australia has produced as I was part of
the Olympic Squad for Sydney. These girls went on the win an Olympic
Gold medal so they would all be up there!
How long do you see yourself playing water polo for?
I have no idea!
At the moment I am fully focused on Beijing and can’t really think
beyond August.
Who was your inspiration to achieving so much in water polo so far?
So many people have been involved in my water polo I couldn’t begin to
name all them but my family get a special mention as they have been
there from start to finish fully supporting me during the ups and the
downs.
Olympics are not too far away, what’s your preparation schedule like leading up to the Games?
We are about to begin a Test Series against the USA in both Sydney
and Perth. Then our National League games are a major part of our
preparation and selection and well as a few other tours before the
final squad is announced in late June.
