Huntington Beach, Calif. (November 13).— Six of the top nine teams in the world of women’s water polo, including the top three, will be taking part in the ninth Holiday Cup on December 5-9 at the Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach, California.
Anchored by the number one ranked team in the world, the United States
of America, the six-team international tournament is sure to provide a
glimpse of the fast approaching 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.
Alongside the USA will be second ranked Australia who Team USA defeated
in March in Melbourne, Australia to claim the 2007 World Championship.
Joining that duo will be third-ranked Russia, fifth-ranked Italy, sixth-ranked Canada, and ninth-ranked Netherlands who along with USA have
already clinched a berth for the Olympic Games. For the remaining teams
this edition of the Holiday Cup will serve as an integral part of the
journey to qualify for Beijing.
The schedule of competition will see each team play each
other in a round-robin type format with points accumulated to decide
who will meet on the closing day of the event to determine a champion.
Team USA has taken the Holiday Cup title on the last six occasions
dating back to 2000 when the event served as an appetiser for the first
ever inclusion of women’s water polo in the Olympic Games.
