Australian Water Polo Inc calls for Expressions of Interest from the water polo community for the positions of Sports Medicine Coordinator and Sports Science Coordinator for the Men's Water Polo program.

Sports Medicine Coordinator (SMC)

Position Description

1.    Screening, Testing and Planning

1.1    Liaise with the NTC/EDC Coaches and service providers on agreed screening and testing protocols to ensure they are being conducted in accordance with set time frames

1.2    Collate all screening results and ensure the rapid analysis of the data; report these to the National Coach and/or as appropriate to the NTC/EDC Coaches bi-monthly or as directed by the National Coach

1.3    Liaise with all athletes playing in overseas leagues and ascertain any screening and testing protocols they undertake with their teams.  In conjunction with the athletes arrange for them to complete as much of the agreed screening and testing protocols at similar times to their counterparts in Australia and collate and report the results in conjunction with all other results

1.4    Liaise with coaching personnel in relation to the reporting of SS/SM testing results to athletes

1.5    Facilitate the accurate and effective evaluation of SS/SM data in order to identify the desired outcome of all testing, monitoring and research to ensure maximum impact on the program and individuals within the program

1.6    Facilitate the interaction between SS/SM personnel and National Team Coaches in order to ensure that SS/SM has the maximum possible impact upon the program

1.7    Plan SS/SM screening, testing and monitoring through to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games

1.8    Liaise with National Team Coaches in integrating SS/SM testing, screening and monitoring into the High Performance Plan; review and update annually

1.9   liaise closely with the SIS/SAS strength and conditioning staff/coaches to ensure an effective plan of injury management and prevention is undertaken and understood by all national athletes. In conjunction with the national coach and the strength & conditioning coaches, the SMC will prescribe individual exercises to compliment the programs that the athletes undertake. The SMC will also oversee the ‘land warm-up’ of players before training and competition and recommend alterations or adjustments where necessary.

2.    Liaison and Provider Identification

2.1    Identify a list of SS/SM providers available in each State to support the program; provide this information to the National Coach and NEC/EDC Coaches

2.2    Liaise with the National Coach to identify the best SS/SM providers and establish a consultative group who can assist and make maximum impact on the program

2.3    Liaise with the NTC/EDC Coaches on the SS/SM services available for each program and report this with recommendations to the National Coach. Work with the National Coach and NTC/EDC Coaches to identify and address any “gaps” in NTC/EDC programs

2.4    Establish and develop a liaison with SS/SM providers in each State to supplement feedback where necessary

2.5    Liaise on a regular basis with the Sports Science and Sports Department heads of the various State Institutions and Academies in relation to the development and conduct of the AWPI SS/SM program

3.    Injury Management

3.1    From the athlete screening and SM  reports develop a “base line report” on the injury status of all athletes in the program; the report to be updated monthly throughout the year

3.2    In conjunction with the SM providers NTC/EDC Coaches and athletes, monitor and report on individual injury status, rehabilitation and ongoing management

3.3    Establish an Injury Management Protocol for the program 

4.    Reporting

4.1    Liaise with the National Coach, NTC/EDC Coaches in order to formally report on the following:

•    progress of SS/SM as a component

•    SS/SM

•    structure of SS/

•    healthcare and maintenance of the National Men’s Squad

Sports Science Coordinator (SSC)

Position Description

Match Analysis Systems

1.1    Maintain an awareness of the match analysis systems available in the marketplace and of those most effectively utilized by other Olympic sport programs

1.2    Organize for the training of coaches and support staff in the effective utilization of the AWPI preferred match analysis system as necessary

1.3    Be available to assist with any match analysis system

1.4    Be responsible for the statistical collection of player and team data for all international games of the Australian Men’s team.

2.    Innovation

2.1    Recommend on additional research and technical innovations that may enhance and impact upon the program

3.    Reporting

3.1    Liaise with the National Coach, NTC/EDC Coaches and SS/SM personnel in order to formally report on the following:

•    progress of SS/SM as a component of the High Performance Plan

•    SS/SM personnel meetings

•    structure of SS/SM network

Application and Tenure

The successful applicant will be expected to commence duties immediately and will conclude shortly after the 2008 Olympic Games.
