pdf  Junior Women's Goalscorers at the end of the Round games

Reigning champions New South Wales Blues were tipped out of the gold-medal spot by third-ranked Queensland 11-9 and second-ranked Western Australia went down in a heap to Victoria 7-5 in the bronze-medal match.
WA drew with both the Blues and Queensland in the preliminary rounds and was expected to go for gold but fell out of contention with a 12-11 semifinal loss to Queensland before being closed out of the podium celebrations by Victoria.
So tight was the competition, that sixth-placed South Australia managed a preliminary win over WA.
But it was in the final that NSW was expected to dominate.
However, with Sam Robertson on fire with four goals from the penalty line and senior international and tournament MVP Billy Miller chipping in with two more, Queensland came from behind to take a two-goal lead early in the final quarter and held out NSW.
NSW was left to ponder what could have been while Queensland won its fourth crown since 2000 and first since 2002.
In the women’s final, the game was locked at 3-all by halftime but NSW Blues gained a one-goal break in the third and swam away a 9-6 victor.
NSW never looked in danger despite the closeness of WA and collected a fifth straight title and seventh since 2001.
Glencora Ralph kept WA in the action and deservedly won the MVP award.

NSW confirms favouritism for finals
Adelaide (January 18).—
The strength of junior Australian water polo is firmly entrenched in New South Wales.

The winner of the past two years, NSW Blues, romped into the gold-medal encounter of the national 20 and under men’s championship with an 18-8 win over South Australia.

Their opponent in the final will be Queensland, an upset 12-11 victor over second-ranked Western Australia, meaning a class match is expect at the Adelaide Aquatic Centre tomorrow afternoon.

The NSW strength was shown in the women’s competition when the table-topping Blues beat SA 18-8, the same score as the men’s match.

The Blues, winners of the last four titles, now face fourth-ranked NSW Waratahs in one semifinal while runner-up WA will battle it out with third-placed Queensland, the 2003 champion, in the other.

Adelaide (January 18).—

Tensions high as semifinals loom
Adelaide (January 17).—

It’s one of the closest tournaments in recent Australian 20 and under water polo nationals history.

The top four men’s teams are separated by just three points with two others two points in arrears.
Four teams are four points apart in the women’s section with another two on equal points three behind.

With one round remaining, semifinal positions are up for grabs but the old adage that fourth place meant almost certain death at the hands of the first-placed team might not be the case at the Adelaide Aquatic Centre.

NSW Blues hold sway in both competitions but the men had a draw to Western Australia. WA then lost by a goal to South Australia, a team currently in sixth position and fired up by junior international Patrick Harmer with three goals and a high 22 for the tournament.

The Blues now need to beat SA in the final round to cement top spot.

WA needs to shift Victoria from third spot to bypass a clash with the Blues until hopefully the gold-medal final on Saturday.
Victoria was 10 goals better than SA so that clash will be a beauty.

The Blues women have gone through unbeaten and just need to blow away sixth-ranked SA tomorrow for top spot.

The Waratahs and Queensland are level on points and will settle third spot in the final round.
WA, who had a one-goal victory over the third-best Waratahs, should clinch second place with a win over fifth-ranked Victoria.

The semifinals will be played tomorrow evening.

Sibling rivalry at 20 and under nationals
Adelaide (January 16).—

For the New South Wales Cox sisters it was no holds barred.

Amanda Cox is one of the spearheads of the NSW Blues team at the national 20 years and under water polo championships here but there was sibling rivalry in the pool in round-three action.

Jessica was scoring goals as well but she nailed a brace for Victoria in the Blues’ 15-6 victory.
Jessica was picked up by Victoria in the draft and is proving a valuable addition to the team.

The Blues collected the scalp of Western Australia in round four, winning 11-8 in what should be a pre-cursor of the final on Saturday.

South Australia and Victoria battled out a 9-all draw in what was an excellent match.

In the men’s division, tournament favourite NSW Blues had a battle royale with Queensland before emerging a 9-8 winner.

WA shook off the national 16 and under team 13-6 while Victoria claimed victory over NSW Waratahs 8-7.

Controversy hits 20 and under nationals
Adelaide (January 15).—

Controversy reigned at the 20 and under national water polo championships when a replayed quarter-minute saw Western Australia snatch a 13-all draw with Queensland men.
It was WA’s opening match and Queensland had the lead with 14 seconds remaining when a player with three exclusions against his name, illegally re-entered the pool.

The game finished and it wasn’t until the WA coach protested and the game sheet consulted before the final quarter-minute was replayed with WA sharpshooter Aaron Younger taking a successful penalty shot to restart the stanza and level the game.

No goal came in the final seconds of the game between the two teams traditionally vying for the right to face perennial champion New South Wales in the semifinals.

The NSW Blues blasted the Australian 16 years and under team out of the water 21-8 in a game that saw brothers Corey and Wade Eames face off with Wade in the national youth squad.

In round three games today, South Australia edged the 16s with SA’s Patrick Harmer scoring a tournament-high seven goals for the victors.

WA beat the NSW Waratahs 9-6 and Queensland just held out Victoria 11-10.

In women’s play, the champion NSW Blues blitzed the Australian 16s 17-1 and the strong WA team thumped normally close rival Queensland 11-2 in round two.

The NSW Waratahs currently hold third spot thanks to a 13-3 victory over South Australia.

Local boy's efforts in vain at national champs
Adelaide (January 14).—

National junior representative Patrick Harmer scored six goals but it wasn’t enough to get his South Australian team across the line against Queensland today.

Playing in the national 20 and under water polo championships at the Adelaide Aquatic Centre, the host team could not hang on to the flying Maroons who contain fellow junior stars Tom Knox with five goals and current senior international Billy Miller with four.

Victoria posted a strong 16-6 victory over the Australian 16 and under squad thanks to six goals from Jarrod Gilchrist and another five from Jeff Diskin.

In the New South Wales derby, the Blues beat the Waratahs 8-6.

In women’s play, Queensland bumped South Australia 15-5, Victoria shocked the Aussie Crocodiles 16 and under team 17-10 and the NSW Blues downed the NSW Waratahs 10-4.
