Sydney (May 22).— International Jane Moran stretched Brisbane Barracudas’ season when she lobbed a match-winning goal at the National Water Polo League Finals Series at the Peter Montgomery Pool, Sydney University this morning.
Playing in the best-of-three elimination series against reigning champions Cronulla Sharks from Sydney, Moran fended off the close attentions of Cronulla goalkeeper Alicia McCormack at the five-metre line to lob and level the game at 8-all on the final buzzer.
It forced extra time and, after going one goal behind, her team-mates scored twice more in extra time for the 10-9 victory and a shot at a third game later in the day to see who advances to tomorrow’s first match in the semifinals series.
Cronulla won Monday’s first encounter 17-15.
The Sharks took control of the game late in the third period and were still two goals up with two minutes remaining.
Moran scored on extra at 1:59 and then, with the clock ticking to zero, she became a hero.
Holly Lincoln-Smith scored the go-ahead goal for Cronulla but Emma Keogh and Kate Gynther replied in the first period of extra time and that proved to be the game.
It was double joy for Queensland as the KFC Queensland Breakers went through in controversial circumstances after Balmain contested a refereeing decision.
Balmain claimed the referees had ejected a player but no one left the pool and Breakers went on to score a goal in the dying stages of the match.
Balmain had the greater energy in the first half, leading 3-0 early and was 3-2 ahead midway through the third period.
But the Breakers levelled four times before the end of the period.
Balmain went ahead twice more in the final quarter only to have the Breakers reply.
The winning goal was scored by international left-hander Suzie Fraser on counter down the right side of the pool with 27 seconds remaining.
Olympic champion Taryn Woods scored five glorious goals for Balmain but it wasn’t enough to extend her team’s season.
Triple champions Sydney University Lions forced an extra game following yesterday’s men’s 10-9 loss to the Victorian Tigers.
The Lions were on top of the Tigers all game and led by three goals at halftime.
Victoria won the third period 3-1 but at 8-6 early in the fourth quarter, the Lions pleased their adoring home crowd with a comfortable win.
Nathan Cargill was in top form with three goals for the Lions.
Fremantle Mariners closed their series 2-0 with an 11-5 victory over Balmain Tigers to go with the 12-11 success the night before.
It was a tight game until the third period when Fremantle gained a quick three-goal advantage after leading by a goal at halftime.
Fremantle controlled the game after closing down Troy Delany, who scored four of Balmain’s five goals in the first three quarters.
