Knox knocks in five as Breakers and Cronulla win Print E-mail
Sydney (May 21).— International Bronwen Knox scored five goals as her KFC Queensland Breakers team beat Sydney’s Balmain Tigers 15-10 at the National Water Polo League finals series here this afternoon. Playing in the Peter Montgomery Pool at Sydney University, the 21-year-old World Cup champion spearheaded the Breakers to a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three elimination final series, opening match.The two are ranked fourth and fifth in the league and are chasing a semifinal berth against either Perth’s Fremantle Marlins or Sydney University Lions on Wednesday and Thursday.Reigning champions Cronulla Sharks, sixth on the ladder this season, outlasted No 3 Brisbane Barracudas 17-15 in a titanic battle in the second elimination series encounter.
It brought back memories of Cronulla’s rise from fifth to lift the crown last season.
World Seven star Kate Gynther claimed four of her five goals in the second half as the Barracudas came back from 15-10 down to sniff at least a draw.
But Cronulla, with Bre Appel topping the scoring with four goals, always had the edge after taking an 8-7 halftime lead.
The men’s elimination finals will be played this evening.
