Brisbane (May 9).— National Water Polo League rankings are wide opening with the final weekend of preliminary matches not necessarily finalising positions. Second-ranked KFC Queensland Breakers men hold the key to the scenario and will face an assault from Victorian Tigers at the Valley Pool tomorrow night and Saturday. The powerful Tigers, just three placings below on the ladder, have four games in Brisbane this weekend and probably can be assured of two wins over the Brisbane Barracudas. But it is the clashes with the Breakers that will make or break the league finalists. Four wins by the Tigers could secure second place and direct entry to the semifinals alongside Sydney’s Wests waterpolo Magpies. The Breakers need to win both matches and negate the need to play a previously postponed match with Sydney’s Balmain Tigers. Should this occur then the Breakers would have to travel to Sydney midway through next week to play the game against the sixth qualifiers for the finals. The lights failed at the Dawn Fraser Pool back on the second day of the season in November and the match has hung in the air since then. The women’s situation is not so unusual with the fourth-ranked Barracudas and fifth-placed Breakers expected to have wins over the No 7 Victorian Tigers. If this follows then the Barracudas will have boasting rights over the Breakers even though the Breakers won the contest between the two last weekend. The finals are being staged in Sydney on May 21-26. |
