Brisbane (April 14).— Perth’s Melville and Sydney’s Cronulla Blue have swum away with the boys’ and girls’ crowns respectively at the national 14 years and under water polo championships at Valley Pool here today.
Melville defeated reigning champion Wests 8-6 in extra time and Cronulla Blue collected the girls’ gold medal with a withering 16-2 margin over fellow Sydneysider Drummoyne. For Melville it was a return to the top of the dais, having won the title previously in 2004 and 2005. The match was locked at 6-all by full time but Melville found two more goals to regain the title. In the boys’ semifinals, Wests beat northern NSW’s Alstonville 10-7 and Melville defeated Cronulla 11-8. Cronulla collected the bronze medal with a 14-9 victory over Alstonville. Maddie Schmidt, as she did in the semifinal, scored seven goals as the dominant player in the gold-medal final for Cronulla. She finished as the competition’s player of the series and scored 27 goals during the week. Cronulla previously won in 2002 and 2005. In the semifinals, Drummoyne clubbed Brisbane’s Barracudas 14-3 and Cronulla whipped Melville 14-1. For the bronze medal, Barracudas had to work for a 6-4 defeat of Melville, the 2004 champion.
