12 March 07 Perth Men's team strike form with only a week to go until World Champs. Two solid hit outs against Spain and Greece in Perth over the weekend saw identical score lines of 10 - 8 with Australia on the winning side in last night's match against Greece, and going down to world number 3, Spain, on Saturday night.
For the team, this was their first real hit out as a full unit and the results were pleasing, given the class of the opposition.
The game against Spain was closely fought in the first half, before Spain got out to a three goal lead in the third quarter.
The Australian team rallied in the final quarter with four goals but were unable to hold the Spanish team who ran out two goal winners.
Goal scorers for Australia: Whalan (2), Franklin, Figlioli, Martin, Neesham, McGregor, Woods 1.
gre0061The team backed up last night with another impressive display beating Greece 10 - 8.
James Stanton starred in the goals with some great saves including one from a penalty shot.
Thomas Whalan continued his good form after only returning to Australia last week scoring three goals and was well supported by Rob Maitland with two goals.
Goal scorers for Australia: Whalan (3), Maitland (2), Woods, Cotterill, Figlioli, Neesham, McGregor 1.
Coach David Neesham was happy with the results.
"This weekend was our first time together as a whole team, and I have been impressed with the results, and how the whole team has played," he commented.
"There are some aspects of our game that require some improvement but we will have a solid week in camp and should be ready to go next week."

11 March 07 Sydney Sydney Olympic rematch between Australia and USA ends in another cliff-hanger.
Seven years after Australia defeated the USA in the dying seconds of the women's water polo final at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, the two teams have again come head to head at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre with the match climaxing in another cliff-hanger.
With the teams using this tournament as a warm up event ahead of the World Championships starting next week, both were determined to show their ascendancy in a physical encounter, and couldn't be separated in the end with the scores locked at 9-9.
This follows Australia's 11 - 9 win over Spain last night.
A tight first half saw the lead regularly changing between the teams, but ended with both team at 4 goals each.
Australia's four goals came from Gemma Beadsworth, Taniele Gofers and two to in form player Gemma Hadley.
Australia's goal keeper Emma Knox frustrated the USA with some terrific saves in the third quarter, giving Australia a two goal lead heading into the final term 7-5.
This was soon reeled in by the USA, before Gemma Beadsworth put the ball into the back of the net to take the Aussies to a one goal lead with five minutes to go.
The USA again drew even at 8-8 and then took the lead with just over a minute left in the match.
Australia was kept in the game with a third goal to Gemma Hadley to leave scores locked at 9-9 inside the last minute.
Terrific steals by Suzie Fraser and Victoria Brown put Australia into attack in the final seconds but they were unable to achieve the same last second goal that saw them win gold in Sydney 2000.
"It was a really good hit out and a hard physical game," Australian coach Greg McFadden said.
"I'm pretty happy with the team's performance but disappointed that we squandered a two goal lead heading into the final quarter.
We're improving with every game and hopefully come next Monday we'll be firing."
Goal scorers:
Australia 9 Gemma Beadsworth, Gemma Hadley 3, Taniele Gofers, Suzie Fraser, Kate Gynther
USA 9 B Villa 3, E Windes, K Craig, N Golda 2

Meanwhile the Australian men's team had a solid hit out in their first warm up match in Perth last night.
The Australian team went down to world number 3, Spain, 10 - 8, and will tonight take on Greece.

Comments From The Coach:
Tonight the girls were switched on to give the vocal crowd something to cheer about.
The crowd were not disappointed as Australia lead 7-2 at half time and could easily have held an even greater lead.
The start of the third quarter saw Australia extend the lead to 8-2 but once again a lack of concentration and committment allowed Spain back into the game with 4 unanswerered goals.
We then switched back on to extend the lead to 10-6 and another early fourth quarter goal saw us hold a 5 goal lead.
Spain then scored 3 late goals to make the score look more respectable for them.
The first half was a 10% improvement on last nights performance and if we can continue to play water polo like that we can succeed at World Championships but once again there is a need to play 4 quarters.
Our lapses in concentration could prove to be very costly.

Aussies go down by one in first World Champs warm up match. After returning earlier this week from a tour of Europe, Australia began their home pre-World Championships preparation with a one goal loss against Olympic silver medallists Greece last night at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre.
The first quarter began with an early goal to Greece before Australia struck back through Taniele Gofers.
Greece scored one more goal to lead into the first quarter break 2 - 1.
Australia came out firing in the second quarter with two goals to Gemma Beadsworth and a great counter attack goal from Bronwen Knox, before the Greek team snuck back a goal to take the half time score to 4 -3 to Australia.
Greece evened the match up with an early goal in the third quarter before Bronwen Knox capitalised on Australian pressure to take back the lead.
Some great saves from Australian goal keeper Alicia McCormack held out a number of Greek attacks to leave Australia up 5 - 4 going into the last quarter.
It only took twenty seconds and a defensive lapse from Australia for Greece to again even the scores.
Suzie Fraser then showed why she was Australia's star performer on the recent tour of Europe with a great counter attack goal before Greece scored three times in a row to wrestle back the lead. With a minute to go Gemma Hadley cut back the Greek lead to just one goal but a last second shot from Kate Gynther hit the woodwork giving Greece a cliff-hanger win.
Coach Greg McFadden was disappointed with the loss.
"There isn't much more to say than that was an extremely disappointing performance and much improvement is required," he commented.
Goal scorers:
Australia 7 Gemma Beadsworth, Bronwen Knox (2) Taniele Gofers, Gemma Hadley, Suzie Fraser (1)
Greece 8 Liosi, Oikonomo (3) Antonako, Roumpesi (1)
Earlier results in the evening saw Italy defeat Spain 9 - 7 and the USA 13 beat Australia B 8.
