Captaining the team will be Thomas Whalan who has returned home this week from playing professionally in Italy for Savona, and he will be supported by vice captain, Trent Franklin and senior players Gavin Woods, Daniel Marsden and Tim Neesham.
Highlighting the mix of youth and experience are the selections of Daniel Marsden and Johno Cotterill.
Marsden at age 36 will be the oldest player in the team and playing his fourth World Championships, 16 years after his first in 1991, whilst 19-year-old Cotterill from Sydney will be making his international debut after impressing in the recent competition and training camp against Montenegro.
Australian coach David Neesham said selection for the team was a very hard job.
“Choosing the team for World Champs wasn’t easy and there are some very good players who have missed out who could count themselves as unlucky,” he commented.
“In the end we were looking for the right balance across the pool, and with this team we feel that we have found that balance and we are now looking to pull together a strong performance against the best in the world.”
The Australian team will go into camp in Perth at the end of next week before competing in a warm up tournament against Spain and Greece on the 10th and 11th at Challenge Stadium and will then fly to Melbourne to compete in the World Championships.
