Hobart (June 11).— Newcastle’s Hunter Hurricanes went one better than last year in beating Sydney’s Drummoyne in the grand final of the boys’ 18 years and under National Championships here.

The Hurricanes fell to Queensland Breakers last year but they made sure of the gold medal this season with a solid 9-6 victory, thanks in part to a three-goal haul from Corrie Eames.
Player-of-the-series Ross O’Brien was restricted to just one goal as his team went from 2-1 at halftime to 7-3 by the third break.
In the girls’ final, Sydney’s Cronulla club went three straight when its White team bumped off the University of NSW Killer Whales11-5.
It was the same top-two positions as last year but the margin has stretched from last June’s 8-6 result.
Three goals in four minutes to player-of-the-series Bre Appel saw Cronulla take control of the match in the third period, moving from 4-2 to 7-3 ahead.
In the bronze-medal finals, Cronulla Sharks defeated Balmain Tigers 14-12 in a tight boys’ encounter while Hunter girls set the tone for their boys by beating Drummoyne 8-4.

Hobart (June 10).—
Hurricanes to clash with Drummoyne for gold medal
Newcastle’s Hunter Hurricanes will take on Sydney’s Drummoyne in tomorrow’s grand final of the boys’ 18 years and under National Championships here.
And in the girls’ final, Sydney teams will decide the gold medal with Cronulla White and Uni NSW having comfortable victories in their respective semifinals.
Hunter took on and defeated the might of Cronulla in their boys’ semifinals with a 15-8 margin with National League players Ross O’Brien and Corrie Eames slamming in five goals each for Hunter.
Drummoyne earned a grand-final spot with a convincing 13-7 defeat of neighbour Balmain. Martin Tyler led the scoring with four goals while three other Drummoyne players scored a brace each.
Cronulla White girls drained the pool with Drummoyne left floundering in the 18-4 romp. Nicola Zagame blasted in five goals and Allison King three as Cronulla dominated all areas of the pool.
The UNSW Killer Whales were almost as dominant with a 14-6 victory over Hunter. Annabelle Carter and Kaatya Armstrong contributed nine of the goals for the Killer Whales.
It was a tremendous showing by the Hunter teams who have risen to prominence on the national scene in the past two years.
