IntroductionsBreaking away to a 2 - 0 early lead, the Serbians had all the running in the first quarter with the Australian team only saved from a larger margin by some great saves from goalkeeper James Stanton.
The Serbians finished the quarter with a late goal to take a 3-0 lead.
Early pressure from the Serbians in the second term and good passing saw their lead extend to 6-0 before the Australians mounted their challenge with two quick goals to captain Trent Franklin from 5 metre penalties.
A quick goal to Gavin Woods brought the Australians to 6-3 at the start of the third quarter, before the Serbians took back the ascendancy with two goals.
Australia finished the quarter strongly with a late goal to Franklin, leaving the Serbians with a four goal lead heading into the final term.
Australia continued their comeback in the final quarter, reducing Serbia's lead to just two goals in the opening minutes with Franklin netting both goals, taking his match total to 5.
Despite the fight back Serbia held off their challenge with a two goal reply to take their total to 10 and to win the match 10 - 7.
Australian coach David Neesham was happy with the team's fight back after being down 6 - 0.
"The Serbian team came out fighting tonight and were very physical from the start, but once our guys matched them we were pretty even.
Even though we went down it was a great hit out, and another good step leading up to March in Melbourne," he commented.
