Pair receives late call-up for USA tournament Print E-mail

Sydney (December 1).— Fremantle Marlins’ Glencora Ralph and Cronulla Sharks’ Holly Lincoln-Smith have been drafted into the national women’s water polo team for an international tournament in the United States of America.

Ralph and Lincoln-Smith get their senior call-up at the expense of captain Mel Rippon and Taniele Gofers, who have had to withdraw from the tour because of minor injuries.
The pair’s late withdrawal means that there are only five players remaining from the team that won the World Cup in Tianjin, China in August.
The team will contest the Holiday Cup in Los Alamitos, California against World League champion the USA, Olympic champion Italy, Canada, European champion Russia and the Netherlands.
The competition starts on Thursday (AEDST) but Australia will play the USA on Sunday and Russia on Monday in exhibition matches.
The tournament will be an excellent pointer to March’s FINA World Championships in Melbourne.
Head coach Greg McFadden said: “The Holiday Cup is the start of our World Championships preparation and only five of the team from the World cup will be attending.
This is due to injuries, selection and three players playing internationally.
“It’s a great opportunity for players who missed out on the major tournaments this year and will go a long way in deciding whether they can force their way into the World Championship squad or whether it is time to give younger or less experienced players an opportunity. “We will select the squad for the World Championships immediately after the Holiday Cup with the team getting together in late January to start our final preparation,” he said.
The team for the Holiday Cup:
Goalkeepers: Emma Knox (Perth Challenge Comets), Victoria Brown (Victorian Tigers). Field players: Nikita Cuffe (Sydney University Lions), Gemma Beadsworth, Katie Finucane, Glencora Ralph (Fremantle Marlins), Jenna Santoromito, Holly Lincoln-Smith (Cronulla Sharks), Kate Gynther, Jane Moran, Melissa Rippon (Brisbane Sirromet Barracudas), Suzie Fraser, Amy Hetzel, Bronwen Knox, Sarah Mills (KFC Queensland Breakers), Gemma Hadley (Perth Challenge Comets).
