AWPI Structure

Water Polo broke away from direct control of the Amateur Swimming Union of Australia in 1982. Before the breakaway, the sport was administered by a sub-committee of the Union. Since then, remarkable expansion of the organisation has taken place in terms of expenditure, activities and personnel. In January 1990, the AAWPA changed its name to Australian Water Polo Incorporated.

The State Associations are the Members of AWPI.

Nationwide competitions are conducted in the National League for both men and women, 20 & Under for Junior Men and Junior Women, 18 & Under Championships, 16 & Under Club Championships for Youth boys and girls and 14 & Under Club categories, with the national men's and women's teams travelling overseas at least once per year, and the national Junior Men's and Junior Women's teams competing internationally every year. and Youth Boys and Girls teams travelling overseas on a regular basis.

The sport is governed by a conference of all states and territories which elect five Directors to the AWPI Board. In addition to these five Directors, there are two nominated Directors by Commissions, namely the Athletes Commission and the National League Commission. The executive directs the day-to-day activities of the association through a National Office based in Sydney.

Coach Education and Referee Education and promotions are conducted by a National Development Manager. This is backed up by numerous State coaching directors who supervise "coaching the coaches" programs and introduce the "Flippa Ball" concept to youngsters.
